Just looked back at my initial PhD proposal to see if there was something that I could use as inspiration for the thesis introduction, and the answer is... no, there isn't 😅

More studies are on the way! If you're interested in how people get help in institutional settings, especially in craft and classroom contexts, stay tuned.
Key finding #3: When instructors are occupied, students select instructors through addressing techniques, further orienting to their institutional identities as assistance-providers.
Key finding #2: Students often do not need to address the instructor with their troubles, as instructors will respond with assistance to turns not addressed to anyone or addressed to other students, showing they orient to their identity as instructors and assistance-providers.
Key finding #1: Institutional identities are procedurally relevant for the provision of assistance: students rely on the instructors’ institutional identities and the associated category-bound activity of providing assistance.
We analysed video from UK craft workshops (e.g., pottery, embroidery, dyeing) to examine how students get help. We show that institutional identities shape who provides assistance and how help is mobilised in these workshops.
The first article from my PhD, "How students get help: Institutional identities as a resource for recruitment," has now been published! Co-authored with @kobinkendrick.bsky.social and Merran Toerien.

Most people in academia feel like an imposter at some point. But feeling like an imposter does not mean you are an imposter. Look at the facts. @phdcomics
