Obviously her face in all of these instances is incredibly saddening, however I truly appreciated these #HelenNorville parallels between S01E02 and S03E04.

How she grew between the seasons, especially in relation to her emotional regulation 💖

Helen took a moment to study the track ahead, and began to put one foot above the other, treading each stair upwards with force and purpose, and bringing herself back to a mindset where she could navigate what was to come next.

“And right now,” Marcia said, “you need a distress tolerance skill, so pick one.”

Helen knew that Dr Marcia was correct. She composed herself, and walked out of the office as fast as she could, speeding up to a run on the landing until she reached the stairwell.

In this moment of distress, Helen was fortunate to have Dr Marcia on call.

Dr Marcia reminded her of the tactics that had worked for her in the past for regulating her emotions, while also affirming that it was okay to feel her feelings.

Deano stood up to go, the blokes patting each other on the back, and Deano headed out the door, finally having said the words he wanted to say, and leaving Rob with a lot to contemplate.

“Mate, I would walk towards the locker room and I could hear all you boys laughing. As soon as I enter… silence. And when I heard you on the telly, saying, ‘we don’t see colour in our sport,’ it cut me.”

Rob’s face fell as both of them were not sure what to say.

“You remember the later season?”

“Yeah, I would have backed ya.” Rob declared. “It’s just one of those things, you snap back at ‘em, sometimes it makes it even worse.”

“Even after the game, Robbie, well, you didn’t say nothing. No one did.” Deano’s voice shook.

“Well, the names. It was shockin’ what they yelled out, but that was to all of us.” Rob looked at his old friend.

“‘Boofhead’ was as bad as you got it,” Deano contextualised, listing off the slurs that had been thrown his way.

Rob took this as reassurance. “Well, that’s good to hear.”

“When I ran out onto that field, the whole crowd yelling at me, you did nothing.” Deano stated.

Deano could sense Rob’s apprehension.

“Oh mate, I… You gotta say whatever you want to say, but I’m just trying to understand… what I did.” Rob grappled with his words.

“Cause I think back on those days and they’re all happy memories. You and me and the boys.”

At the pub, the two old Saints boys came face to face for the first time in years.

“Robbie!”
“Deano!”

Comments about who was looking fit and about little Hana and Jerome were made; a friendly catch up between two old mates.

Deano and Rob had not seen each other in years, but as the two old Saints boys met up together at the pub, Rob found out that it wasn’t what he did, but rather what he didn’t do, that still deeply troubled Deano all these years later.

From her #ACurrentAffair promotional clip from 1988-89, #JanaWendt was “at the front of Australian journalism,” who asked “the tough questions,” and was also “a woman who can laugh.”

All of these quotes are present in the promotional clips for Helen and Jana.

I will never forget the kindness #MichaelLucas extended to me when he invited me onto the newsroom set last year.

He gave me my own #TheNewsreader story to tell, and a chance to take some ownership of the show that has changed my life.

He made the experience a dream come true!

As well as being the creator of #TheNewsreader, #MichaelLucas has donned many onscreen hats too.

He has four roles to his name; the DJ at Geoff’s birthday party, a camera crew member in Darwin, a switchboard operator at the Logies, and an interviewer on Dale’s cassettes! ❤️📺🌟

There is power in portraying stories of people who do not quite fit into societal norms, of those who are looking for somewhere and someone to belong to, and through the stories of Helen, Dale and many others, viewers have found comfort in this.

I am always thankful for that moment in the mid 2010s when #MichaelLucas first envisaged the bare bones of Helen and Dale, which evolved into the most beautiful historical television project that was brought to our screens in 2021 - 2025; our beloved #TheNewsreader ❤️🌟📺

It’s not an exaggeration to say that without Michael’s creative brain, #TheNewsreader simply would not exist, so a big happy birthday to him from fans everywhere!
