Militarism doesn't keep us safe. So what would real security look like?

Vital new project from @cmmonwealth.bsky.social and @transitionsec.bsky.social ⬇️
While the US & Europe ramp up military spending, millions live in poverty.

Today, we launch Transition Security Project, investigating how militarisation makes us poorer and less safe amid climate crisis — and what genuine security could look like. 🧵

After empire, the only way for Britain to stay globally relevant was to stick close to the USA, said @davidwearing.bsky.social on the latest ep of the New Economics Podcast. 1/2
Beyond the chancellor, the OBR sets the terms of our fiscal framework - and underestimates the benefits of public spending in their forecasts. Changing how the OBR operates would more accurately reflect the true benefits of investment and the dangers of austerity. 3/3
Despite some changes to the fiscal rules in the last budget, the chancellor is still beholden to a flawed fiscal framework which is preventing her from reviving the economy. Rachel Reeves should start by raising taxes on the wealthiest and rethinking the fiscal rules. 2/2
Will the wealthy leave the UK if we tax them fairly?

Rachel Reeves dismissed "scaremongering" about wealthy people leaving under higher taxes.

She's right - the UK wealth exodus is a big fat myth, said @hollies.bsky.social in @newstatesman1913.bsky.social

Three things we can do to protect ourselves from extreme weather:
🏡home insulation to keep us warm in winter and cool in summer
🛬stop expanding airports and making the problem worse
💸tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies so the people who caused this pay for it
Our recent report "Breaking the Bank" revealed that the Bank of England has cost the UK government nearly £80bn since 2022 and is expected to cost around £20bn a year until 2033.

Here, the report's author, NEF Economist Dominic Caddick, is interviewed by MNI.

Ep.3 of the New Economics Podcast is out now!

Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Khem Rogaly from @transitionsec.bsky.social @cmmonwealth.bsky.social and @davidwearing.bsky.social from Sussex University to discuss how the UK became a global arms dealer.

How did the UK become a global arms dealer?

Out now.
Adopting these policies will keep us warmer in winter and cooler in summer - at the same time as reducing the need to burn polluting, expensive gas for heating.
The cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of preparing for extreme weather and kicking our dangerous addiction to fossil fuels.

Some policies will even be a win-win: such as well regulated mass-insulation, ventilation and heat pump rollout for the nation's draughty homes.
The impacts of extreme weather risk deepening inequality.

In the UK, “every constituency” is projected be at greater risk of flooding, with many areas likely to become uninsurable.

Right now, this government has no serious plan to deal with these problems.
As the climate crisis intensifies, the UK will face more floods, droughts and heatwaves.

Today's Guardian article highlights how woefully unprepared we are to deal with the impacts of these extreme weather events on people, businesses and communities.

This is terrible and worrying but calls to scrap ECO scheme altogether are knee jerk at best and won't do anything to ramp up the rate of insulation measures.

Suspend rogue installers publicly + gradually move away from a supplier led delivery model.

Labour MPs have called on Rachel Reeves to scrap council tax.

🧵 In this thread @chaitanyakumar.bsky.social, NEF's Head of economic and environmental policy, outlines our proposal to address inequality through tax reform. 👇
Like stamp duty, council tax is reviled on the right and the left. Calls for reforming it are welcome and the govt. should at least get the ball rolling on that this budget. We propose:

☑️Proportional property tax
☑️Scrap SDLT
☑️Reform business rates with land tax

Our report makes two proposals for how local authorities can better protect the needs of children in accommodation.

Nowhere to grow
The hidden harm of temporary accommodation on children
neweconomics.org
Our research also found that a lack of information sharing in local authorities means children in temporary accommodation's needs are going unmet - something that can be addressed.
Poor conditions and the inherent instability of temporary accommodation are causing exhaustion, fear and anxiety in children.

Those in temporary accommodation are at risk of a wide-range of harms including mental health problems, malnutrition, and difficulties in school.
Thousands of children are growing up without enough space to play, learn, and rest.

During our research, one support worker in a primary school told us that children were doing their homework on toilet seats because they had no other room.
Across the country, children in temporary accommodation are facing severe harm to their physical, mental, and developmental health.

This is a country-wide problem which requires intervention from national government to fix.
