🇲🇽: The National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) approves the reform to article 2 of the constitution. In their 4th meeting, changed their statute to align with article 2. Adelfo Regino Montes (Mixe) stated that this will help the INPI provide funds and autonomy for Native and Afro-Mexicans.
🇧🇴: Trial against coup leaders in Bolivia in its final part! Final arguments will be made in the case “Golpe de Estado I” against Fernando Camacho & Marco Pumari for organizing the coup against Native pres Evo Morales. The govt wants a guilty verdict to set a precedent. The case began on 17 Oct 2024
🇪🇨: Black and Native Ecuadorians mourned. 4 Black children in Guayaquil, Ecuador, were detained and unalived by 16 military officers as part of President Noboa’s war on gangs. Their bodies were found burned. Protests were held outside the Prosecutor’s office demanding justice for the four children.
🇵🇪: Natives mourned a massacre led by the Peruvian gov’t. The Association of Martyrs and Victims of January 9th led a 3 day protest after 2 years of a massacre of 19 Indigenous people in Juliaca, Puno. They were protesting a coup against Pres. Pedro Castillo. A massacre was also done in Ayacucho.
🇧🇷: President Lula da Silva is sending over 1900 civil servants to protect Indigenous peoples from Brazilian settlers. The move done by the gov’t FUNAI hires these temporary workers to strengthen court cases in favor of Natives such as in Munduruku, Pará, which has seen a rise of illegal mining
US: Congress told it has a “colonies problem”. Virgin Islands delegate Stacey Plaskett blasted Congress after her and other territory delegates were denied a vote, then her mike was abruptly cut. People in US colonies or “territories” like Puerto Rico, Guam, & Virgin Islands have less voting rights
US: Land Back victory for Shinnecock Indian Nation! The Bureau of Indian Affairs designated the 104 acres known as Westwoods as tribal land that denies local and state control over Shinnecock sovereignty. This may overturn a NY state court ruling against a tribal billboard saying “Indian Country”

Some good Indigenous news! The Yurok Tribe of California will get 125 acres of its #landback and be the 1st US tribe to co-manage it with the National Park Service. The sacred land, stoIen to extract redwood trees and gold, will now be used by the Yurok for ceremony and environmental education

🇭🇳: Natives in Honduras say they’ll keep fighting a maximum security prison in 2025. After a month of protest, the Miskito people say they’re united in preventing the prison’s construction on their land. Miskito leader Mirna Wood stated they will go to the capital Tegucigalpa to increase pressure.
🇨🇴: 2 Police officers are charged with unaliving a soldier and illegally detaining a Native leader. The acts which occurred on 27 Feb saw the offices use excessive force and the Indigenous leader Luis Evelio Rodríguez’s rights violated. Colombia’s Prosecutor Office will now take both to court.
🇨🇴: After racist attacks for her trip to Paris, Colombian Senator Martha Peralta counter attacked saying she’ll take Native fashion to Paris. The Wayuu leader called on artisans and designers to meet with the gov’t to popularize Wayuu fashion in Paris. Pres. Petro supports the plan.
🇧🇴: Bolivia’s govt and Indigenous ministers call for unity this new year. President Luis Arce VP David Choquehuanca, Indigenous minister Esperanza Guevara, among others, call for lithium industrialization, Native agriculture sovereignty, and anti-imperialism on Bolivia’s 200 yr anniversary (1825).
🇵🇦: Natives threatened with extinction in Panamá. The Guna people face climate changes, tourism, & resource extraction, threatening their existence on their islands. 300 were already displaced from Gardi Sugdub island due to rising sea levels. The Guna were the ones who coined the term Abya Yala.
US: Federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe passes the House of Representatives! The Lumbee Fairness Act or H.R.1101, which raises Lumbees from state to federal recognition, was voted by the House in a vote of 311 to 96. Now the senate must approve the bill for Pres. Biden to sign it into law.
🇲🇽: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum just gave an Indigenous nation a university. Sheinbaum and Yaqui representatives inaugurated the University of the Yaqui People in Sonora with 356 students accepted. This is part of the reform of constitution article 2 that now recognizes Indigenous autonomy.

🇬🇹: The New Year means Mayan officials have new elected leaders! Communities in Quiché, Guatemala, have made New Years the time to celebrate traditions like the Molo’m festivity and to reaffirm their unity by changing their communal leaders, including in Xesic Tercero, Tzabal, and Salquil Grande.
🇵🇪: Shamans in Peru reveal prophecies for 2025. Various ‘shamans’ have conducted their annual ocean ceremony to offer prophecies for the new year. Among their prophecies they say nuclear war is possible in 2025 and earthquakes in the US and Mexico. They prayed for peace and us to be with nature.
🇨🇴: Indigenous senator in Colombia criticized for traveling to Paris. Christmas photos posted by Martha Peralta (Wayuu) on social media with her husband leading to criticism for her not wearing Native clothes on the trip. Pres. Gustavo Petro defended her saying she can “dress however she wants to”.
