Like they might've actually designed something really cool on their own, but they find that some loveable dork on DeviantArt already beat them to the punch, and they're like, "Aaaw damn it, now I got'a go with something lame," instead of risking legal fees or whatever.

Nintendo is obviously stupidly litigious when it comes to condemning people for infringing on their copyright, but I maintain the theory that the reason why Pokémon alt-forms infamously suck is because they don't want to be accused of stealing vastly superior designs made by fan-artists.

Fat, hah. The joke is that there was a whole trend a year or so ago where people would draw Revali super fat and Sean Chiplock himself would be retweeting and commenting about how he wanted them even bigger.

I'm sure it'd be fun rendering them with muscle though too, of course.
