RIP Tomonobu Itagaki, visionary behind the Dead or Alive series and reinvigorating the Ninja Gaiden franchise - passed away at 58.

DoA3 and Ultimate, plus Ninja Gaiden, were key reasons behind me picking up an Xbox again several years ago.
A Japanese poster for the original Dead or Alive arcade game - 3D combative sports!

Lieutenant, don't jerk me off!
You cannot convince me that a new Godzilla movie from Toho using suits, with full studio backing and a high budget blending practical effects with modern techniques wouldn’t look fucking incredible

Snake Plissken is one of the coolest motherfuckers ever
I love both with all my heart, I’ve seen each like a million times ever since I discovered them as a teenager who was fully obsessed with Metal Gear. Over the years I’ve come to prefer LA for its louder bombast, and it’s louder political stances.
Once again I must say

Escape From L.A. > Escape From New York

rewatching the texas chainsaw massacre. somehow it gets better and better every time. struck by the really sad moment of Franklin sitting and frowning as he hears his friends goofing off in the house. he just has the fucking worst day of all time.

Godzilla 1985 is my preferred version of Godzilla '84 AKA The Return of Godzilla. All because the dub is just so dang good and snappy.

The tramp's lines here are gold.

"Why do people get upset with remakes? It's not like they replace the originals"

Capcom execs: We replaced the original games, why re-release them?

I like The Thing.
John Carpenter, nuclear science fiction, atomic horror. The visual grammar of movie monsters, James Whale’s retooling of expressionist shadow, subsumed by space age apocalypse, Karloff’s Frankenstein abomination itself transformed into the lumbering Thing From Another World. Universal horror’s suspense, noir’s razored edge, the darkness and blinding white now the mushroom cloud’s trumpet. Pulled, kicking and screaming, though technicolor, spewed up on the other side of the Hays Code into the eager hands of vulgar auteurs and tooth-cutting craftsmen all too giddy that they got to say “Fuck.”  The Quatermass Xperiment is all over Carpenter, a brash and determined American seizing the reigns of discovery from the Blitz-blasted British perspective of the Cold War and demanding strength, uncompromising wrath, and, if needed, total goddamn destruction. Godzilla’s US release manifests in The Fog, Raymond Burr’s dutiful radio broadcast beneath Odo Island’s bomb-scorched god reflected in Adrienne Barbeau‘s terrified resilience in her seaside studio as the mists of hacking ghosts breach the mainland. The Thing From Another World dropped into Psycho’s lowbrow Armageddon, the evil of Hell itself manifesting as babysitter slashing as the soulless Shape, ascending into the bitter night air of Halloween itself, fidgets and sizzles with the long-forgotten fallout of Nyby’s classic radiation.

The Thing is so distant from the 1951 original but mired in the exact same Cold War, the same grubby fingers on the same big red buttons thirty years later. The dread and paranoia had long since become instinct, humming contamination, and the sick joke of Kubrick’s use of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” had slipped into sardonic state of being. So honest, so genuine, is a crowded liminal supply closet of horny and angry men so ready to snap into violence, distrust, and bomb-primed mutually-assured decimation. What other response is there, so baked into Americana itself, when our secrets are threatened? When the fire forged in the Midwestern deserts blasted to glass or ignited in Godzilla’s undersea terrain signal warbling saucers to our ticking time bomb of a world?  The opening UFO, cobbled from pure 50s kitsch in a post-Star Wars universe, broiling with something rotten and biologically depraved, a masterwork of animatronics, puppetry, and spewing slime and gore.

The first of Carpenter's informal and disconnected “Apocalypse Trilogy,” I like to think the Thing is more closely related to the dissonant, but parallel, cosmologies of the other two. Prince of Darkness’ Anti-God and his Satanic son of hivemind goo. In the Mouth of Madness’ Wall of Monsters, the parasites of faith manifested by worship, by conversion. What else could the latter be but the Heavenly Host of the former? What could the Thing be if not a fallen angel of their number? Or the return of Christ himself, lit with fire, feet of bronze?  The Thing’s loyal computer screen scripting grim gospel. “PROBABILITY THAT ONE OR MORE TEAM MEMBERS MAY BE INFECTED BY INTRUDER ORGANISM-“

The Prince of Darkness’ monitors hijacked, furiously clacking with the gospel of the Anti-God: “YOU WILL NOT BE SAVED BY THE HOLY GHOST.”

“- 75%.”

“YOU WILL NOT BE SAVED BY THE GOD PLUTONIUM.”

Plutonium. Oppenheimer’s kindling.

“IN FACT,

YOU WILL NOT BE SAVED!”

(Also, neither MacReady or Childs are the Thing at the end, fuck off with that.)
