April 14, 1993: Chicago Bulls fan Don Calhoun attends his first Bulls game in three years and throws in a 75-foot shot that wins him $1,000,000.

Per Sports Illustrated, Calhoun was selected to shoot because a Bulls employee felt his “suede hiking boots wouldn’t scuff the court."
October 16, 1979: Los Angeles Lakers rookie Magic Johnson puts on a show during his first regular season game in The Forum—a 105-96 win over the Bulls.

Magic finished his second career NBA game with 19 PTS/9 REB/8 AST. Artis Gilmore led Chicago with 20 PTS/13 REB.

October 16, 1997: San Antonio rookie Tim Duncan plays his first home NBA game—a 96-76 preseason win over the Wizards at the Alamodome.

Duncan had 20 PTS/10 REB and Spurs teammate David Robinson had 14 PTS/2 BLK. Washington's Calbert Cheaney scored 12 PTS and Rod Strickland added 11 PTS/13 AST.
Yeah. It doesn't help that most of what we have from the 90s is from a digitized version of a VHS recording of a mediocre television signal in resolution that wasn't all that different from the 70s. And sadly, most of the archived tapes from TV stations will be destroyed before they're made digital.
October 16, 1996: Lakers rookie Kobe Bryant plays in his first NBA game—a 90-80 preseason win over Dallas in Fresno, CA.

Bryant had 10 PTS (4-4 FG)/5 REB and Shaquille O'Neal scored 12 PTS for Los Angeles. George McCloud scored 18 PTS to lead the Mavericks.

October 16, 1990: Former Minnesota Vikings WR (and 4x Pro Bowler) Ahmad Rashad briefly enters an NBA Preseason game for the Philadelphia 76ers and scores two points.

The Sixers defeated the Timberwolves, 102-96, in the first NBA game at Target Center (with 18,296 in attendance).
October 15, 1993: Assured he’d be traded to the Miami Heat (for Glen Rice and Willie Burton), the Clippers' Danny Manning had a flight booked, his bags packed, and he’d already said goodbye to his teammates.

And then Clippers owner Donald Sterling vetoed the trade at the last minute.

October 15, 1999: A pair of third quarter slams from Tim Duncan during the semifinals of the McDonald's Open in Milan.

San Antonio defeated Italy's Varese Roosters, 96-86, after a 32-13 scoring run in the game’s final 9:30. The Spurs’ Avery Johnson had 18 PTS/12 AST and Mario Elie added 16 PTS.
October 15, 1991: Jeff Hornacek of the Phoenix Suns has his college jersey retired by the Iowa State Cyclones during halftime of a preseason game against Milwaukee in Ames, IA.

Hornacek’s college teammate Jeff Grayer of the Bucks and ISU coach Johnny Orr were also on hand.
October 15, 1993: Charles Barkley of the Phoenix Suns says he is "99.9% sure" he will retire after the 1993-94 season.

...and then after the 1993-94 season, Barkley played six more NBA seasons, finally retiring on April 19, 2000.

October 14, 2004: Pistons rookie Carlos Delfino's game-winning three with six seconds remaining gives Detroit a 105-103 preseason victory over the Boston Celtics.

October 14, 1987: Rookie Scottie Pippen signs his first contract with the Chicago Bulls—worth more than $5 million over 6 years.

Four years of the contract are guaranteed, with two option years. He will make just under $830,000 in his first NBA season.

October 14, 2004: Sacramento's Chris Webber drills a 55-foot shot to beat the third quarter buzzer during an NBA Preseason game against Houston at Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China.

The Rockets defeated the Kings, 88-86.
October 14, 1988: The Lakers improve to 2-0 in the NBA Preseason with a 130-110 win over the Warriors in Honolulu, HI.

Magic Johnson had 24 PTS/11 REB for Los Angeles. Golden State's Chris Mullin scored 25 PTS and teammate Mitch Richmond added 21 PTS.

Shaquille O'Neal finished with 26 PTS (11-17 FG) and 9 REB for Orlando. For Los Angeles, Loy Vaught had 25 PTS/13 REB and Malik Sealy scored 20 PTS.

Dee Brown’s leading bounce pass to a cutting Larry Bird that Magic Johnson couldn’t get to & Robert Parish instinctively cutting to the front of the rim then Larry hitting him in the hands with a pass high enough to go over the head of Vlade Divac & Robert Parish’s hands.

Los Angeles won, 118-104. James Worthy scored 21 PTS and Magic Johnson added 18 PTS and 12 AST. Reggie Lewis led Boston with 19 PTS.

Yeah it’s a fun story, especially knowing no one was seriously injured (but they were trying to avoid a recent incident in which Walter Davis got hurt on a slick floor). I’ll post a few more details in a bit.
