SOMERVILLE (continued)

Importantly, Question 3 is a non-binding resolution. Burnley, Jr. is a stalwart defender of Palestinian freedom, who has spoken in favor of the resolution, and pledges to follow it if passed. (His opponent, Jake Wilson, opposes the resolution.)
Democracy is not divisiveness. If the people tell their leads to divest from Israel's illegal occupation, apartheid, and genocide, then their leaders should do it. I have stood up time and time again for the rights of our residents and, as mayor, I will work to safeguard and expand those rights.

SOMERVILLE

Somerville for Palestine endorses Willie Burnley, Jr. for Mayor, and a Yes vote on Question 3, which would instruct the city to divest from businesses that sustain Israel’s enactment of apartheid, genocide, and occupation of Palestine.

Understood. I just hope we don't elect a pro-sweeps mayor. If we do, then councilors' understanding of this issue won't be enough to shift city policy in a direction that actually treats our unhoused neighbors with dignity and respect.
Councilors in Somerville don't have direct authority over this. But the Mayor does. Unfortunately, one of our two mayoral candidates, @jake4somerville.bsky.social, supports sweeps.

Boston limits cooperation with ICE, but some city officials warn that renewing a federal grant could undermine that commitment. “Who’s to say that we will enter with one set of beliefs and end up with unintended consequences?" asks Councilor Julia Mejia.
Bid to Renew Federal Grant Sparks Concern Boston May Help Trump’s DHS on Immigration
The grant helps fund a law enforcement center that’s drawn criticism over privacy and over data-sharing with ICE. It would also come with new strings to spend money on border control.

neither capitalist party will fight for democracy. @demsocialists.bsky.social will
I asked Chris Murphy if he privately talks to Dem colleagues about why they don't sound the alarm loudly. His answers were depressing. Dems tell him they don't want to be "alarmist" or that "democracy" didn't work in 2024, so they want to stick to health care. 5/

the trump admin is trying to bribe schools, including MIT, into stripping trans students’ rights.

if MIT caves, they will be turning their backs on Cambridge’s community values and likely violating Massachusetts non-discrimination law.

our city will not stand for it.

Social housing just makes sense. It creates truly mixed-income communities. It's self sustaining. And it can add hundreds of new homes across the city, including many that are deeply affordable. Projects that are publicly owned & democratically controlled.

Did Trump win in November because he showed grace and empathy to people who voted for Joe Biden in 2020? Politics is not an Afterschool Special. You put out a strong message about what's wrong, propose a compelling policy agenda, hope the economy cooperates and that's it. None of this mush.
Saving America from Trump and preserving our democracy explicitly requires that people who voted for Trump change their mind. Which in turn requires that those who didn’t vote for Trump show grace and empathy to those whose change of heart came from being hurt by the guy they voted for…

Nearly every Dem in the State House voted for that tax cut. Including our state rep. Actual Dems.
Alas. Healey is an actual Democrat. The Dems, particularly the MassDems, are a neoliberal party firmly committed to the project of maybe, ever-so-slightly tweaking the status quo (so long as the tweaks won't upset the donor class too much).

It is important to understand that this is what ICE has been the whole time. This is what ICE was when it was created when I was like twenty, this is what ICE was when Obama was president, and this is what ICE is during bad orange man. They need a full truth and reconciliation process and punishment
