“Copyright growing pains” is one hell of a euphemism for the biggest IP theft in history

Anytime there is a X is universal, I'm usually thinking it's a convenient narrative for the person saying it and that it necessarily bares out across time, place, & different cultural groups.

I think Dunbar's number is just too media-friendly a concept. Reduces complexity.

Look what NM is doing. Childcare workers should be paid living wages. This should be an investment for the entire community, like public schools. Note: The governor is a woman (therefore more likely to be aware of how much of an issue childcare is)

What?!

And this is orders of magnitude more complicated if you have a nonspeaking child as both my kids were when they were preschool aged.
mwduff.bsky.social
It's really stressful as a working parent when a) there isn't a lot of childcare available & b) you're not certain of the quality. My kid was bit by a dog at their first childcare (later another child was hurt much worse. I don't think there were consequence.) The second place was wonderful.

Between January 2021 and July 2024, #Maine cited 60 child care providers for failing to tell the state or parents within the required timeframe — or at all — about a range of violations, including rough handling, unsupervised children and cruel discipline, according to reports. Read for free below:
Some Maine daycares stay quiet about abuse and neglect
Two cases show the difficulty of holding daycares accountable when they are responsible for reporting themselves.

In 2013 with Shelby County v. Holder -- I was pissed off about this and students were like, "what's going on?" and then I realize how not in their world the particulars of the Voting Right Act are... too taken for granted, like all other rights.

Wednesday is gonna be a rough day:

The Supreme Court will be hearing oral argument in a pair of cases that threaten what little remains of the federal government’s ability to protect voters from racial gerrymandering under the Voting Rights Act

In Jess Nguyen’s urchin tethering study, one striking result was the effect of predator diversity.

“Finding that reefs with more predator species had faster urchin predation really showed the importance of predator diversity, not just abundance”

The US federal attack on Portland has resulted in the best advertisement for a city that I have ever seen. Round-the-clock joy, community solidarity and silliness that much of the West has lost and longs for.
