A Dambimangari lady fishing on the jetty at high tide this evening nonchalantly showed us a pic of the most mouthwatering dish of chilli and lime mud crabs (2 x, and they were huge) she ate last night from yesterdays catch 🦀

Even the graffiti on the jetty deck reflects the different social culture here 🧡

Derby is deeply significant country for 7 different First Nations peoples whose country overlaps here, at the bottom of King Sound.

It features some of the most extreme tidal variations on the planet (+11.5m), its muddy waters contrasting the azure seas of the west side 🌏

Multi-hued clouds in the Kimberley skies over the iconic Derby jetty, looking west towards the Mary Islands, during the buildup to the Wet 🌩

No doubting this was a pure dingo, despite the presence of domestic dogs at the Djarindjin community only a kilometre or two away.

I'm going the wedgie, Jo 😉🦅

You've gotta see this place sometime before you get old, and you should do it with the people who know it best.

Genuinely feels like a privelige to watch Bardi kids gleefully leaping into the tidal flow at Ardyaloon to spear trevally and stingray, like they have been doing for a thousand generations before, or lighting a small grass fire to chase lizards out while the black kites circle overhead 🦅

I tested the mangoes hanging from the many huge loaded trees here.

A massive manta ray cruised past me standing in knee deep water in the bay.

And this afternoon, sitting in the excellent camp kitchen in the otherwise deserted campground, a dingo wandered up to drink from the sprinkler.

There's a network of campsites called Camping With Custodians across the north of Western Australia.

Staying on Country with its traditional custodians, observing first hand some of the oldest cultures in the world.

Today, at the gorgeous Lombadina community, it's been an eventful day. 🧵

Like so many of our native marsupials, virtually ALL they need to thrive is some remnant bushland, and elimination of introduced predators including cats, dogs and foxes.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy are demonstrating this so perfectly in their sanctuaries all over Australia.

It's the topic everyone in Canberra is talking about and now thanks to ChaserBet, you can win big on this bizarre story!

I managed a farm close to the Dryandra National Park WA in the late 90s. There were a few numbats being seen in our remnant bushland by the time I left there, because I relentlessly eradicated every feral cat and fox I saw.
Numbats are such gorgeous critters, and not exclusively nocturnal either.

Mate, I'm all over this vibe 😄

Simply a 10/10 beach experience to swim here (albeit watchfully 🐊 ) on a completely deserted beach.
Needless to say, the water temperature is bliss.

Volume UP*

* or not, it's so quiet. 🥰

Forget kayaking at Ardyaloon, the tidal flow here on this full moon is the most massive current flow I have ever seen on the ocean, pouring into and out of King Sound.

Catch this outgoing tide, and you might end up in West Timor, which is the next landfall behind those islands.

Ardyaloon feels like you are stepping away from modern Australia.

It is a closed and private community, on traditional lands. There is no alcohol allowed here. Drone photography is banned. There are no jetskis. White visitors are not permitted here after dark.

There are also very few tourists.

This is Ardyaloon, on the saltwater country of the Bardi and Jarwi peoples, at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula 210km north of Broome WA.

It's hard to put into words how stunning this place is, and it is an incredible privilege to be graciously permitted to visit here. 🩵

There is a wood-fired bakery at Lombadina that fresh bakes bread a coupla days a week.😋

Going to check out the bakery and the beach at Djarindjin today, and then maybe a paddle at Ardyaloon up at the tip of the Peninsula.

Stay salty, folks ✌️
