Pakistan’s Never-Ending IMF Story: Borrowing for Survival, Not for Growth
When Will We Finally Learn?

Each time an IMF tranche lands in Pakistan, it’s celebrated like Eid in the corridors of power — applause in the Ministry of Finance, cheers at the State Bank, and smiling headlines across media outlets. Yet, outside those air-conditioned rooms, the nation braces for another storm — higher taxes, costlier electricity, inflated fuel prices, and a tighter noose around the common man’s neck.

It’s no rocket science, but it seems we’ve forgotten the basics of economics.
Borrowing for growth fuels progress.
Borrowing for survival fuels decay.

When nations borrow to invest in education, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, they build wealth, capacity, and resilience. They create jobs, exports, and innovation — a cycle of productivity that strengthens both people and currency.

Let’s be brutally honest — it never does.
We’ve borrowed for decades and built little to show.
We’ve paid interest in billions yet gained no self-reliance.

Worse still, we’ve built a culture where even educated professionals and economists rush to congratulate each new loan approval, as though dependence were a national trophy 🏆. That applause is not patriotism — it’s economic servitude dressed as success.

It’s not about politics — it’s about priorities and dignity.
A proud nation borrows to produce, not to consume.
A wise nation borrows to rise, not to survive.

The formula is simple — yet forgotten:

Nations that borrow to produce, progress.
Nations that borrow to consume, collapse.

It’s time Pakistan breaks the chain of fiscal dependence and redefines what “economic success” really means.
