I have read state and revo, the commie manifesto, and I have a collection of Marx and Engels works (in german). I still need to read more though. For modern writers I recommend finkelstein, parenti and jennifer c pan.

I one time wrote an academic assignement about it, but the lecturer just gave me a bad grade called me "a leftist of the globalist elite" and then published my premise under his name in a progressive forum. Its because of capitalists and conservatives why we cant have nice things.
