In Defense of Public Lands - Methow Rising

Public Lands Demonstration
On October 11 the local chapter of One Million Rising, Methow Rising, hosted an informational protest at the USFS Rainy Lake/Maple Pass trailhead, milepost 158, Hwy 20. The purpose of this demonstration was to callout policies of the current Administration which threaten our public land use. Handouts available at the trailhead read as follows:
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
In 1911 the Okanogan National Forest was established for the American people. The North Cascades Scenic Highway was dedicated in 1968. Currently these public lands are under significant threat.
• We are already experiencing greatly reduced staffing (everything from trail maintenance and outhouse stocking to research into taking care of your National Forest at the Forestry Sciences Lab).
• This North Cascades Scenic Highway corridor is a target for logging (Executive Order #14225 March 1, 2025).
• Sale of public lands to private companies has been proposed repeatedly by Senator Lee of Utah and others. They are not letting this die.
• Privatizing management of our public lands is on the table. Instead of purchasing just theNorthwest Forest Pass (a $30 annual fee) or an America the Beautiful Pass for all federal public lands (an $80 annual fee) it has been proposed that Concessionaires who serve private companies, staff and charge for every service currently managed by the Park Service or Forest Service (camping, parking, etc). These people replace federal employees, and it costs you more.

What You Can Do: Contact your representative.
• "I do NOT support reductions in force for US Forest Service (USFS), National Park Service (NPS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), or US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) employees."
• "I do NOT support additional roads or logging in the North Cascades Scenic Highway corridor."
• "I do NOT support transfer of public lands out of public hands."
• "I do NOT support privatizing management of the National Forests, National Grasslands, National Parks, or Wildlife Refuges."
Tell your friends and family about these very real threats and encourage them to act as well.
