obviously the real thrill was Springsteen, who not only did the usual publicity blah, but he watched the film (while all the actors fucked off)

it reminded me of (even if it wasn’t necessity that similar to) Birdland by Simon Stephens - now that was a play! In 2025 that would surely go straight into the West End on the back of Andrew Scott

saw Deliver Me from Nowhere at the LFF - it’s a decent film albeit a bit vibes based in parts but it certainly hits a mood even if it could maybe interrogate it a bit more

I took my children to a preview of ZooTown, the new immersive bit of London Zoo, and while I would question whether or not they learned anything I would say it’s very entertaining and well worth the £1 extra fee! www.timeout.com/london/news/...
I got a first look at London Zoo’s new immersive experience ZooTown before it opens to the public this weekend
Here’s what the fancy new role-play area for kids is like.

a fact about me is that the episode of Seinfeld where George wants his old books back from an ex girlfriend and Jerry is like ‘why? Are you gonna read them again?’ entirely liberated me from sentimental attachment to books (even though I’m unclear on whether we’re meant to agree with Jerry or not)

One of the posts that got me flamed back in the old place was when I said I didn’t fetishise books as objects and wasn’t bothered if their owners wanted to rip them in half to make their baggage lighter or chuck them in the recycling once they’ve read them or whatever. Some people went ballistic
nick-pettigrew.bsky.social
The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

a side note but as somebody who has never used ChatGPT, I am SORELY VEXED that it is apparently well into my beloved en dash

it does feel like a good way of evading scrutiny/eking out a few more previews, although equally it must be said that the December calendar is ludicrous until about the 18th and then abruptly becomes impractical to open a show in
mrlukowski.bsky.social
a West End microtrend is major shows going into previews some weeks before Xmas and then not opening until January – Woman in Mind, Paranormal Activity and High Noon all opening the first week of Jan, which is now ludicrously stacked when last decade it would have been desolate

Mary Page Marlowe at the Old Vic is a peculiar play that feels like it should have either had 11 different actors playing MPM across its 11 scenes or like, two, but having five with two of them famous and getting more scenes just leaves it feeling quite wonky www.timeout.com/london/news/...
Review: ‘Mary Page Marlowe’ starring Susan Sarandon and Andrea Riseborough at the Old Vic
The two women head up the cast of Tracy Letts’s dizzying tale of one woman’s life told in 11 scenes

I don’t really get what ‘Tilly Norwood’ is actually supposed to do, like what is a scenario in which it would be deployed in a film, let alone a play

despite a good deal of admiration etc I’ve never really *connected* with a Beatles album before but have for whatever reason been absolutely rinsing Abbey Road this week
mrlukowski.bsky.social
yeah – in isolation I really enjoyed the scene where he could hear all of Polonius’s asides, but what was it supposed to actually tell us (I was briefly toying w idea it’s meant to be like R&G are Dead except it’s Hamlet who realises he’s trapped in Hamlet… but no)
mrlukowski.bsky.social
it can work but depends what flavour of madness – my fave Hamlet still the batshit Michael Sheen one where he’d become unable to distinguish what was real or not, and I really enjoyed the Globe’s psychopath Hamlet of a couple of years back. This was a bit like 'crazy guy!' (but quite entertaining)

to be fair I do usually have a weird reaction to the summer > autumn shift but after that I’m a big fan, number one season (though kid’ rampant delight in Halloween definitely part of it)
mrlukowski.bsky.social
Autumn’s nice what did it ever do to hurt you? Too much mist? Too much mellow fruitfulness?
mrlukowski.bsky.social
(it looks like it’s meant to be a 'fun' take so fair enough etc)

new NT hamlet is 2hr 45min! pathetic!

I mean I'm a bit hazy on why it wouldn’t simply be them running this glorious future-proofed club-slash-arts centre when it reemerges, but I can see why you’d deem it the end of an era
mrlukowski.bsky.social
Sad news about Corsica Studios, which is I believe literally the only club I have been to in the last ten years (but more than once in the last ten years I’ll have you know!), although can’t help but be reasonably optimistic about their actual statement

happy quarter century, DiS, weird to think I was quite heavily involved in years nine to 16 of this
