Trickier Surds questions with Y11 in #MathsToday

I love writing questions based on fun maths challenge qus and found these I wrote a while ago that I really like

PPT on old blog post here: chelekmaths.com/2023/06/20/s...
Was meant to be tanx sec^2x and then I wrote it wrong and it ended up being a non example that lead to us watching a BlackPenRedPen video together to do it!
Put this together for my year 13s in #Mathstoday when starting Integration by Substitution as I sometimes find the textbook questions a bit tricky to start of with when I just want them getting used to the process.

PPT and some other questions here: chelekmaths.com/2025/10/10/i...

#AlevelMaths
Simpler integration using reverse chain rule and substitution
Got these questions ON REPEAT with my year 13s at the moment. Almost finished integration and these crop up basically every lesson in #Alevelmaths #MathsToday
Oh wait the last one is a disaster would be better with just a radius of 10 not root 10
Maybe a couple of non examples to start!
Plan is to leave it open and then have that conversation during the lesson! Talk through what assumptions we have made 😊
Will put the PPT and some accompanying notes online hopefully this week!
Made this for my Year 7s and Year 8s tomorrow after @joausten.bsky.social's fab session on Number Sense at #Mathsconf39. Will be very interesting to see how it goes!

Were you there @paddymacmahon.com? Would've been great to meet you if so!
That's so good to hear - thank you! We'd love to see any of the sets you guys create. I'm currently working out the best way to collate them all...
Loved! Would be cool to see the sequence of questions you used for that topic!
Also got so much out of the sessions I went to @mathsmuse.bsky.social @mrmattock.bsky.social @joausten.bsky.social left me with loads to think about!
Had a great time at #Mathsconf39 yesterday. Thank you to everyone that came to @mrsteele314.bsky.social and my session - the collective "Oohs" when people came up with good questions were a joy. #Mathstoday

Finished by look at an absolute classic Maths Challenge question that is great for talking about patterns and generalizing - so fun!

Then taking a look at trailing digits... 3/4
Then looked at some simpler examples to build up to the Maths Challenge question... 2/4
Looked at Factorials with Year 10 in #MathsToday

Started off looking at odds and evens based on the Maths Challenge question in the bottom right.

I always love using Maths Challenge questions as a starting point for planning - this one was particularly fun 🧵1/4
Questions involving powers and factorials where students need to group things into odds and evens
Did this with my year 13s in #Alevelmaths as a gentle warm up.

Getting them to guess what f(x) and g(x) was and to find each area depending on their functions was less gentle! #Mathstoday
Made this Circle Theorems and Trigonometry worksheet inspired by interwoven maths @nathanday.bsky.social in #Mathstoday
