New piece: I wrote about Netflix’s LONG STORY SHORT. It’s a funny and enjoyable series that also grapples with what it means to be Jewish, which makes it important given how the Trump administration is co-opting Jewishness in perverse ways.

In “Long Story Short,” Jews Will Not Be Replaced - MovieManifesto
Netflix's new comedy is a powerful exploration of what it means to be Jewish. Someone should tell the Trump administration.

This weekend in “I contain cinematic multitudes”:
“While there’s nothing inherently wrong with a blockbuster that prioritizes brawn over brains, ARES pretends to offer provocative thoughts on the human condition in the age of AI’s ascendancy, only to hastily retreat from saying anything meaningful.”

Tron: Ares review: Jet with the Program - MovieManifesto
The third Tron movie is less stupid than the first two, and it looks terrific. But the story remains dumb, and the AI stuff is a muddle.

Can’t really complain given that I had an ugly 26% in here, but so mad at myself that I didn’t go with THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE because I somehow convinced myself it was “too obvious.”
New piece: I give half a pass to TRON: ARES; it looks and sounds great, and Jared Leto is more tolerable than you might expect. But the story is nonsense, and its ideas about A.I. are a muddle. Still, could be worse!

The casting of Allison Janney’s husband in #TheDiplomat is utterly shameless. Relatedly, I squealed in delight.
[confidently hitting “Publish” on my BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY review] This is it, this is the one that finally breaks me through
Pinning all of my hopes on “inexplicably has follower counts in the tens of thousands,” outlook not so good
There is no plausible universe where Jude Law and Jason Bateman are brothers, but they are so funny together in this. Probably my favorite Bateman performance since THE GIFT, just pure scuzzball electricity.
“Stop moving! STOP FUCKING MOVING!”
It remains surreal that the numbskull who runs the country continues to push vile and racist immigration policies because his shriveled brain can’t comprehend that the word “asylum” carries multiple meanings. Yet another entry in the “How is this real life” canon.
Q: Why did you authorize the CIA to go into Venezuela?

TRUMP: They have emptied their prisons into the US. Prisoners from mental institutions, insane asylums ...
Its plotting is silly and its themes are blurry, but those two monologues last night from Nicole Beharie and Billy Crudup are why I will never quit #TheMorningShow.
This weekend in “I contain cinematic multitudes”:
I trust there will be a segment on EIGHT MEN OUT with the headline, “Tighe goes to the runner”

Insisting based on Michael Sheen that this is secretly an UNDERWORLD movie
Dammit this is funny. Like, he thinks Habeas Corpus is a guy walking around Portland, burning flags and looting stores. He also runs the country, so that’s not great.
Q: Have you given any more thought to possibly suspending habeas corpus?

TRUMP: Suspending who?

Q: Habeas corpus

TRUMP: I don't know. I'd rather leave that to Kristi.

To be a writer is to constantly struggle with your own choices, like wondering whether you should have instead headlined your ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER review with the pun “Revolutionary Mode”

One Battle After Another: Inherent ICE - MovieManifesto
Paul Thomas Anderson's epic is a scorching political document that's also a robust action movie that's also a sharp comedy. A marvel.
