Baptized a Catholic, but born an atheist, Democrat, Red Sox fan... Boston since I reached the age of reason, but OFW (Originally from Worcester). Occasionally comment, seldom post. All things considered, I'd rather be in Ireland (especially Galway).

So true. It's like playing perpetual Whack-a-Mole - only playing for democracy, decency, and people's lives, rather than some arcade tickets to turn in for crappy "prizes." It is beyond exhausting.
This!
The Law and Order franchise is not screwing around. On SVU last week and Law and Order tonight, they are taking on Trump albeit indirectly.
I've been watching "Law & Order" for 30+ years. Tonight's was the finest, most chilling episode I've ever seen. As many of us realize, Trump and his rotten gang are hell bent on absolutely destroying the country. Bravo, Dick Wolf and "L & O" for taking them on, however obliquely.
They have no shame, but might these companies not be embarrassed by association with a gawdy, tasteless excrescense worthy of Saddam Hussein? Can they at least be pressured to lean on Trump to involve reputable historians, architects, and preservationists in the process of shaping this beast?
While none of these corporations are ashamed to pay a bribe, do you think we could at least embarass Lockheed, Apple, Google, Meta et al. into pressuring Trump to involve reputable architects, historians, and preservationists into vetting plans for the ugly, gawdy POS he wants to build?
Horrified. Frightened. Sad. Very sad. What will this madman destroy next?
That would be my Big Three, E-Street leading the way. But my tastes also run to Celtic and folk.
Everything about it is vile. What an eyesore this beautiful building - OUR beautiful building - will become.
My mother was a North Sider. My parents were married in her Catholic parish, largely German and Irish. Now heavily Mexican. I always look from afar (Boston) to see whether they're raiding her old neighborhood. Scary, sickening. My good and kind mother would be crushed to see this. As I am.
Callous and vile are the right words. Kids, working poor, elders, disabled, those with mental health issues...The list is long. This admin is beyond grotesque, but, sure, let's tear down the WH and build a monstrous, gawdy ballroom. Let 'em eat cake, all right.
Volunteer in a day shelter and many of our folks get SNAP. The benefits aren't much, but give autonomy and choice. We serve fewer meals earlier in the month because folks have money on their cards. We anticipate a big increase in early-in-the-month demand. Ripple effects of these vicious cuts.
Me, too. Beautiful day, beautiful crowd, beautiful message.
Oh, Philip, it can happen. Why, I didn't know I was an America-hating terrorist until Mike Johnson let me know.
That's some "facade removal!"
Naive I may be, but I'm astounded there aren't a few R's with the decency to force Johnson's hand. And even if fully lacking in decency, do swing district R's not fear for their political lives? Do they all believe that gerrymandering and the Insurrection Act will save their not-worth-saving asses?
The Moi Charity, I assume.
My condo is in a 164 year old building, one of a block of same-style granite bldgs in downtown Boston. There are a handfull of approved door and trim colors. And don't even think about messing with those windows.
If Trump gets a hold of the video, he'll probably post it as war-ravaged Portland. Or whatever city he next decides to invade.
As a life long Red Sox fan, I know first hand that there IS crying in baseball. But the last time I cried they were tears of joy when the Sox beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. May your next baseball tears be joyful ones.
The Guardian is good if you're looking for a daily. Excelllent coverage of the US.
The soundtrack of my childhood includes my mother whistling "La Vie En Rose." On the way from the funeral parlor to church for her funeral Mass, my sibs and I did a tribute whistle in the limo.
And thanks for posting your book list. My goal is 2 books a week. Lit fic, history, biography, social issues, politics, mystery, police procedurals, beach reads. All over the place as long as well-written. Always on the lookout for new writers. So thanks for your list.
