PSA from @johncusack.bsky.social: Democracy is under attack — and paywalls shouldn’t stand in the way of accessing vital public records.

News outlets, it’s time to drop the paywalls for FOIA-based reporting.

Hear why this is so important at the event below:

I called Trump a fascist years ago
Why didn’t you state plainly to Nicolle that Trump isn’t a Fascist in the same way you do on here?

“This is not about drugs, it’s not about Venezuela, it’s not about anything else but this new assertion by the president that the U.S. military will kill anyone he points at, for any reason he deems sufficient.”

Very true and very scary comment by Tom Nichols.

"Even if these boats have drugs on them, there is no enabling legislation, no authorization, that says the President of the United States can decide drug runners are bad and he can kill them anywhere in the world."

Yes this is great. But after FL, MO and other R states redistrict and SCOTUS kills the VRA, Republicans will have the technical means to make the baseline House balance +5 R on the national popular vote.

And it will all be perfectly legal.
This is what democracy looks like. #NoKings

Hi. I wrote an essay about AI slop: How it feels like an invasive species for the internet. How its boosters describe building a future that’s devoid of craft. How frictionlessness can be nihilistic & how this stuff seems to leach part of our shared humanity out of the world. I hope you'll read it.

The problem is not civic education. That would help. But the most dedicated Trump people are in their 50s and 60s and 70s educated during the supposed golden age of civic education
When the "No Child Left Behind" act was passed, social-studies teachers warned that reducing civics and humanities in favor of focusing on "areas related to economic success" would have serious consequences for our country.

... and 20 years later, here we are.

I know a number of well-educated MAGAs. I too wish folks on the left would quit treating this as a lack of education.
What they lack isn't education, or even intelligence.
What they lack is empathy.

This is what happens when people don't understand the difference between authoritarian corruption and fascism. Because they have no word to fill in the space between "George Washington" and "Hitler," everything that isn't democracy becomes "fascism"
Isn't trying to prosecute your political enemies part of a fascist state? Isn't the federal government defying court orders?

We live in the beginnings of a fascist state. We are not total fascist yet if you want to get that specific. But it's creeping.

So, again, you're debating semantics. Again

A policy meant to empower poorer Black South Africans has instead enriched elites connected to the ruling African National Congress, critics say, as support for the party dwindles.
