I will say the labels are useful in starting a more detailed conversation about this stuff because many people (my family included) still literally cannot register affection between two people of the same sex as love

it's a signal that you are somewhat aware of other options

the irony of the whole thing is that if you ask someone for their sexuality, you're /probably/ close enough to them that you can ask for a more detailed answer over a label

unless you're someone that doesn't care about making friends before getting in romantically/sexually

it's the annoying thing with labels - they allow you to get across a bunch of information quickly, but also in such broad strokes that might not be exactly what you intended

and the discourse around what each term means is a big fuckin headache also
