Writing about civics and government; making things; dad & husband. Working with my brother on a documentary about American teachers. Yes, I did write all those Crashcourse history videos for John Green.

This is what happens when you default to an "originalism" that sees anything after the Bill of Rights as constitutionally suspect, even if it's in the Constitution. I'm surprised they don't just overrule Marbury and get the whole charade over with.

Which we absolutely should, so we can then explain that they can be brought to heel by democratic organizing (i.e. unions)

probably because they don't associate it with kingship. We are taught that kings are bad, but not what makes them bad, and how to recognize when someone is behaving like a king.

And your point is a good one, too. Support for people with disabilities used to garner bipartisan support. The Rehabilitation Act, IDEA and the ADA are all evidence of this, especially when you consider that Teddy Kennedy and Bob Dole both pushed for the ADA.

It makes sense when you realize that for them CEO=king. We probably should have made this clearer before electing an inept CEO as president.

Here's the hill I'll die on, though: American schools do not teach students enough about how monarchies work in reality. If kids understood the basics of personalist rule, they would see the Trump administration for what it is, dime-store, wannabe, Louis XIV bullshit.

What does "No Kings equals no paychecks" mean? Is that a threat? Is he likening CEOs to kings? (an apt comparison I would say)
mistermeyer.bsky.social
that's like saying that Clinton signed it in 1997 when it was reauthorized. Bush had little to do with the passage of the IDEA, but he was much more involved in the ADA.
mistermeyer.bsky.social
The IDEA was passed in 1975. I think you mean that Bush signed the ADA.

Ahh yes, Some or several police officers out of an estimated 30,000 or so NYPD cops. I know a number of New Yorkers who are afraid of Zohran, does that mean I can write an article for CBS News, Bari? Pretty Please?

Is that AI creature supposed to be reading Scientific American? While riding a dragon? I don't think anybody wants to watch that foolishness.

I wrote a whole essay/lesson on how we can use T Jeff as a model for making different historical judgments. It involves giving weight to individual actions/decisions/writing and making those weights visible. The key is that we recognize our judgements reflect our own biases and that people differ.

Students understand the contradiction and hypocrisy right away, but they usually stop there. It becomes easier for them to understand when they read some of T Jeff’s writing that dehumanizes Native Americans and Black people. T Jeff contained multitudes, some pretty bad.

I know that the Econ prize isn’t technically a Nobel, but can we PLEASE stop paying any attention to it? This years prize went to 30 year old research on innovation and creative destruction that the current AI nightmare and Enshitification suggest is no longer applicable to the real world.

Reading anything that Thiel said makes me stupider, and I just can't afford that right now.

Silicon Valley would be better with fewer billionaires. The optimal number is zero.

No activist worth their salt would open a book with Steven Leavitt and Niall Ferguson blurbs on the front. (That book is garbage, in either case)

I am begging everyone to hammer on the distinction between “Trump’s government wants to hurt Americans,” and “THE government wants to hurt Americans.”
mistermeyer.bsky.social
The fallacy that regular people need to pay any attention to his nonsense is the same at the idea that teachers are indoctrinating their students. People say shit. Others hear it. That doesn’t mean the listeners understand the shit or that the shit matters in the first place.

What’s the point of being rich enough not to care what people think of you if you care so desperately what people think of you?
mistermeyer.bsky.social
Regardless of his interpretation, why does anyone think that Thiel’s interpretation of Watchmen and One Piece are anything that anyone should care about in the slightest? Just because he’s rich and evil doesn’t mean we need to know what he thinks, does it?
mistermeyer.bsky.social
When you refuse to call what they are doing evil and you refuse to say no to it because “who am I to judge,” this is what you get.

Maybe at the university level, where I’m told there isn’t a lot of focus on pedagogy, but at the secondary level student-led-learning doesn’t lend itself to mechanization or standardization.

Unless he dies suddenly, Trump is going to pardon them all on his way out the door. We need to amend the constitution to limit the pardon power to exclude government officials who commit crimes.

Remember when Alex Jones said that all the frogs were being turned gay? That needs to be part of the frog discourse, I think.
