Thank you so much to DreamForge for publishing it and especially the artwork; so exciting to see my writing illustrated!
The Fine Art of Faking It
The service I provide is niche, but surprisingly in demand. Owen was a fairly typical client: scruffy hair, practical clothing, and of course that intense expression […]

Morag and Seamus stories! Just read all of these and they are great. Such convincing future world building - I love the optimistic but realistic take on how people might behave in a potential post-crisis Britain.
Oh perfect thank you! I have been trying to cross reference with Clarkesworld but this is much easier
Great story, thank you. I really loved The Portmeirion Road too so am excited to work my way through the whole series now!
You’re right of course - and indeed there are one or two books on my TBR even older than yours…!
Loved The Saint of Bright Doors so much, I can’t wait to read Rakesfall! A bit late perhaps but far better than never.
The selectors said: "Rakesfall is an extraordinary achievement in science fiction, and a titanic work of art.”

My strongest book-related belief is that the paperback should come first and then the hardback after for people who want a fancy edition.
I kept thinking of Black Maria in this episode’s discussion of Arthurian themes! I think it’s a really enjoyable one, quite a tricky take on gender especially from a contemporary perspective. It always reminds me of a trip I did to Dartmouth as a teen and took a wander in a wolfwood…
Had to pause listening to say how much I LOVE comparing Plague of Peacocks to It’s A Good Life (possibly the most horrifying story I’ve ever read)-it captures what I enjoy about the story. I’d immediately go and read the two together if I could bring myself to reread the Bixby story which I can’t.
I’m in the UK and they’ve just tightened up the criteria this year for some reason (*cough* funding). I’ve been looking into it and I can get one privately, it just costs £100 which feels like a lot!
Disappointed and worried to discover at my vaccine appointment that I am no longer eligible for the covid jab. People with my condition are more vulnerable to covid so I don’t understand why the government has stopped protecting us. At least I still got the flu one…😢

Tony Harrison RIP
I taught Long Distance, his beautiful & honest poem about bereavement to my students for decades.
Eventually, it provided consolation to me as well.
Love this picture so much!

3. this is not the moment for an incredibly expensive increase in state surveillance infrastructure to be run for profit by private tech firms just before Labour ushers in an (even more) authoritarian right wing government.

The visceral horror of biting into a chocolate spread sandwich at a birthday party only to be assaulted by the marmite taste
Yes! And while I think some of 'strong smart girls' anthologies can be great, it's lovely to see just a regular old set of stories with plenty of interesting female role models too.
...featuring a wise great-grandmother who spends her time singing to herself and twiddling her thumbs. I remember this picture very clearly and studied it intensely to try to figure out exactly what 'twiddling one's thumbs' looks like. I still think of it now when I hear the phrase!
Thanks to a recommendation from @effjayem.bsky.social on the Eight Days of Diana Wynne Jones podcast I looked up Ruth Manning-Sanders' collections, sure I remember reading them. And the first story in the first book I investigated (A Book of Mermaids) was Sven and Lilli...
