Yew, hedge cranesbill, and greater knapweed, all caught my eye this week.

Spotted a few of these unexpectedly this week, and I almost broke into song:

“As I was going to Strawberry Fair, Singing, singing buttercups and daisies …”

(no strawberries anywhere to be seen though…)
A shiny yellow buttercup with five rounded petals , growing in some rough grass. A daisy with many thin white petals around a circular yellow mound in the centre.

A solitary windswept harebell on Selsley common, a rain drenched red campion still in flower by the Sapperton Canal. Also Field Scabious and Spindleberries - not open so the wonderful colour-clash of orange seeds against the pink of the fruit casing is yet to appear.
Four separate close ups of plants. A blue harebell, a red/pink campion flower with raindrops. A purple/blue multi petalled round scabious flower and some bright pink spindleberries glowing in the autumn sunshine.

Blue sky with Blackthorn, early April this year. Now, five months later, this blossom has turned into a profusion of sloes.
A bright blue sky with an aeroplane trail in one corner. Many branches of blackthorn in blossom. The branches are densely covered with white flowers.

Sorry, I am very late for wildflower hour. Angelica - but not sure which sort - in our local woodland. This one had a very dense seed head compared with its neighbours.
And (k)napweed.

A tapestry of colourful fruit:
walnut, hawthorn, blackberry, acorns, rosehips, and many, many sloes in south Oxfordshire this week.
Five small photos showing different kinds of wild fruit found near me this week. Several green walnut cases, some blackberries winding through a hawthorn tree, the black berries a contrast against the red haws. A large group of green acorns, some bright, shiny red rosehips, and the soft waxy surface of blue/purple sloes on branches covered with acid green lichen.

A pink form of yarrow, and a sunny patch of fleabane, both found in south Oxfordshire this week.

#wildflowerhour
Small pink flowers grouped in clusters. Leaves below look a bit fern like. A large patch of bright yellow flowers of Fleabane. Maybe 100 separate flower heads. Centre of each flower is darker yellow than the outer ring of small petals. The flowers stand out against the green background of the leaves around.

Seven spot ladybird enjoying the sunshine today on some Rosebay Willowherb in the Chilterns.
Red ladybird among the bright pink flowers of rosebay Willowherb.

Eyebright, Euphrasia (not sure which one) growing on a chalky Chiltern hillside.
Tiny - it hides in the grass - and is one of my favourites.
#wildflowerhour
Two tiny white flowers with yellow spots and purple lines on the petals. Eyebright was a traditional treatment for eye disorders in the past, dating back to Greek mythology.

Red bartsia, water mint, marjoram, and (I think?) black horehound?

In the pink?
There seem to be many flowers in different pinkish shades at the moment. Some of them here …
Rosebay willowherb, corn cockle, bramble, bindweed, yarrow.
#wildflowerhour
5 different flowers in varying shades of the colour pink. Rosebay willowherb, corn cockle, bramble, bindweed, yarrow. As well as being different versions of the same colour, the flower shapes are quite varied.

Thanks Moira. Good to know. A new one I have learned this week.

ID help please. At Bernwood Forest this week. I think it is common hedge nettle/purple betony. With small white spider.

Bernwood Meadows today - a colourful tapestry of flowers, dominated by knapweed, mostly purple, but with this odd white specimen.
#wildflowerhour
A grassy meadow with three trees on the hedge boundary in the distance. The meadow in front has a colourful mix of flowers dominated by purple knapweed and yellow cat’s ear. A single white knapweed flower stands out among the sea of purple.

I love sundews, but shame about the poor (red list) butterflies. 🥴
