The number is on the decline, because of grant cuts and a slowdown by the federal government.

The University announced several cost-containment measures earlier this year: a staff hiring freeze, a 2.5 percent overall budget reduction and a pause on launching the construction of any new campus buildings for at least a year.

In May 1977, Notre Dame student photographer Paul Joyce took a photo at a campus picnic that would become an iconic image of the 35-year presidency of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh.
It came to be known as "The Girl Who Danced with Father Hesburgh."
