So he projects that onto people who are as authoritarian and cruel as Fred was, and for a brief moment, their praise feels like he's getting that hug his dad clearly never gave him.
The rest of his ego is inflated by freely breaking taboos.
A) He's too stupid and narcisstic to notice how he got played.
B) His win condition isn't doing good for America, it's when he can feel his status goes up. Which he does by abusing power and people without consequence, and basking in hollow praise from father-surrogates.
