Having dived into this rabbit hole this morning and poking around the various pitch pages for each of the alternate CoH servers, I have to say that Thunderspy piques my interest the most since it offers a robust expansion to the character creator and AT changes that I'm very interested in.

I was today years old when I realized that more than one pirate City of Heroes server cropped up after the 2019 reveal. Homecoming is the biggest and has the official public sanctioning from NCSoft but there are at least two other builds on separate forks that went with different design decisions.

I saw that and also his targeted veto against trans people getting to have a safety net supply for their treatment too. He wants to pretend he's on everybody's side while quietly shivving the people he never liked and pocketing the money for his corporate cronyism.

The Galapagos effect seems to be real from what I've read of the patch direction for Rebirth and Thunderspy this morning, now I'm wondering what adaptive evolutions these other servers offer, haha.

I'm just boggled by the fact that 6 years ago, the source code for CoH was freely available and they didn't take that time to rethink their whole strategy. The sunken cost fallacy must have grabbed them by the knackers and squeezed HARD. :V

All's this to say Ship of Heroes really spent 10+ years trying to reinvent the wheel when they could have found a ready audience and enthusiasm for whatever heirloom design decisions they wanted to do to differentiate themselves from the pack. And people would donate to maintain their little server.

They're both smaller populations than Homecoming but that means their dev teams are more responsive to their niche needs. I say good for them and it will be fascinating to see how different each branch will become as they keep adding content. I don't know if they're sharing assets between each other

One of the builds claims to hew more closely to the initial Ouro code than the SCORE branch that Homecoming runs on and introduced one new AT that was very well received it seems.

They all have their adherents and have differentiated themselves from each other in Darwin's finches ways. They're all still recognizable as the original game but they've speciated from the source code that was leaked and that code is still being open source developed.
