Happy Columbo’s Day
Screenshot from Columbo. He his talking to his dog, which is sitting is the drivers seat of a car. “Okay, I’m gonna put you in charge. You take care of the car. You’re a responsible dog. When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

It's funny how the tradcaths love saying "submit to Rome" but they hate actually submitting to Rome.

Pope Leo XIV has blasted how wealthy people live in a “bubble of comfort and luxury” while the poor suffer. In his first teaching document Thursday, Leo confirms that he is in perfect lockstep with Pope Francis on matters of social injustice.

Apropos of nothing at all, a cool thing about TN work authorization is that every time you enter the country they stamp your passport and write the name of the employer under the stamp.

Working in the US on a TN (explicitly non-immigrant) visa was great. Had a couple of "so I'm a migrant worker..." opportunities in response to people thinking I was a willing audience for their rant about migrant workers.

The turning radius is necessary so that vehicles with long wheelbases (buses, trucks) can use the roundabout. For a small residential street you can just say "we don't accommodate those" but on an arterial like Parkside you do need to support buses and light trucks.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

But idk, I’m barely beyond a layperson at this point. I still need to remind myself that they don’t use sigmoid activation functions anymore.

(2) “we don’t know how the observed behaviour emerges from those mechanisms”. The person you’re quoting is I think referring to (1), which is an increasingly common misconception among laypeople. That misconception seems to lead layperson dogmatic skeptics to reject (2) as well.

I think there’s a genuine terminology problem here. Just this morning I’ve seen people say “we don’t know what happens inside the LLM”, which is false. When we say “we don’t know how it works” it variably implies (1) “we do not know the mechanisms that are involved” or /

I would simply not post my exhaustive list of 'artistically good' video games if Disco Elysium (admittedly goated) was the only non-AAA game I'd ever played. Fallout NV isn't even the only 'artistically good' game from that studio + director.

disco elysium
half life 2
bioshock
fallout nv
rdr2
….
end of list?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it's not clear to me what regulator has the ability to say no here even if they were so inclined. There's no market consolidation, they're paying a premium over the stock ATH, and the Saudis are generally not prohibited from owning US firms.

You would think the obvious solution to "the volunteer-powered project we all train our AI models on for free isn't adequately twisting reality to our political views" would be "... and so we stopped training on it" and not "... and so we will force the volunteers to bend to our will"

Great news, the Build Canada dorks are now trying to tell you what your position on federal bills should be, using AI that seems to break regularly and produce inconsistent results for near-identical bills (Hellenic Heritage Month is neutral, but Albanian Heritage Month should be voted against?)
