May 2003? I think I might need to crack open my bound volumes to narrow it down further: But they've been propping up my second monitor for a decade.
Think I'm working on my best story since Citizen Thiel. So good I don't even mind writing on the weekend. 3000 words in and it feels like I might be half-way? Just 200 more pages of OIAs, three hours of interview transcripts, and several dense pages of legalese to sythenise and I'm g2g.
Years after publication I visited The Fitz. The barman told me they hated me for a while for it, but over time embraced the noteriety. They had a framed copy on of the article the wall. I got a free jug.
In memorandum of the burning down of Palmie's The Fitz, here's my first (and only, really) piece of gonzo journalism for Salient in 2003 about the Worst Pub in the World. CW: Piss and vomit. @jgreenbrookheld.bsky.social
Stand by. I’ll post the Salient 2003 scan soon as an eternal digital memorial.
So many voms, lost like tears in rain.
Had panicked today and worked like a demon thinking it was a short week and I only had one more day before the weekend to finish a long-brewing project. I came home, frazzled and barely holding it together, and my wife told me today was Wednesday, not Thursday.
Thai E-Sarn (refugee from Food Alley RIP) on Hobson St might be the best Thai joint in the city. Beef salad 10/10 no notes.
Watercare’s fault reporting service has all the charm of a back-end spreadsheet, but a minor leak in our meter box got sorted <24 hours so AG.
Best I got is David Suchet in Amadeus in 2000. Obvs standby as a 20-year-old exchange student. Hearing your friends managed to score sweet recent tickets I regret not selling out to Big Theatre earlier in my career.
I recall being similar tempted - Jake Gyllenhaal in second billing! I love Jarhead - until I again checked the market.
I was in New York earlier this year when it running. It was a preview season but tickets were USD500 and up. NZD25 sounds like a bargain!
Good Night, and Good Luck is pretty good. My enjoyment was was tainted by a review I wrote for a class being dissected by an ancient woman who had double-dated with Murrow in the 1950s and found discrepencies with the historical record.
I found the same with Point Break (1991), but actually not legally available.
Goddamn (allergic?) eczema outbreak on my eyelids. My eyes are gonna be swollen shut by morning. Spring is whack.
Objectively, nothing tops chorizo-fried bacon, right?
Pickup sticks ‘til ‘26.
Out in Titirangi we have lots of power outages. Some water outages. But the most insidious and debilitating is a fibre outage, now ticking into its 30th hour.
ep5 closes with Smashing Pumpkins 'Cherub Rock'. Still batting at 1000, imho.
Had planned to do a deep-dive into comparative damage assessment methodologies, but hit 3k words and thought it best not to end on a downer. Instead I ended with a fobidden joke:
My final story from the epic/tragic/comic Zuru nappy trial. Feat: Reflections on the startup exit stories we tell ourselves, competition issues raised for for supermarkets and suppliers, and a hand-scrawled note where the Taylor family are schooled about FAANGT. www.nzherald.co.nz/business/com...
‘Treasures ends tomorrow. Or it’s on’: How a dispute over diapers erupted into ‘all out war’
The protagonists, the arguments, and a joke than cannot be repeated.

You have missed me churning out 12k words over the last month on this asbolute courtroom steamer.
