Feeling a strong need to go and clamber around some Welsh slate quarries in the fog...

Dinorwig, January 2022

A working level within the huge Dinorwig slate quarry in Eryri / Snowdonia. Jagged slate and looming mist make it resemble an inhospitable alien planet. A solitary bare conifer and some scrubby grasses the only colour in an otherwise monochrome and darkly shadowed scene.

Congratulations to children from Sacred Heart school who have contributed drawings to Keely Hodgkinson's plaque on our Wall of Fame in Leigh. An 'Our Art Neighbourhood' project with Leigh Neighbours started four years ago, Keely is the 15th person to be included in the mural. #communityart #leigh

Simon Denis, Landscape near Rome during a Storm
Flemish, ca. 1786–1806

"Denis painted the majority of his informal nature studies out of doors. Notations on the back of this example, however, indicate that he based it on a drawing that he had previously made in the countryside near Rome while observing the phenomenon of passing rain accompanied by a rainbow. The horses and rider fleeing the storm are a motif borrowed from the seventeenth-century painter Nicolas Poussin." (The Met)

It’s tough being an artist these days, as confirmed by this new research published in Artnet:

U.K. Artists’ Earnings Dropped 40 Percent Since 2010.

Some 80 percent of artists surveyed reported that their earnings were “unstable” or “very unstable.”
