I don't consider myself aromantic (too prone to falling in love) but romantic love has never been the number one priority for me, especially in fiction. I don't care about a ship unless it would still be just as interesting without the romance

the romance is not incidental but the relationship between the characters involved would still be compelling even if it wasn't there

re: quoted post, I think the best fictional romances out there are driven by tensions unrelated to being in love, and built on connections unrelated to attraction. a "yes, but" approach to romance.

I have a personal theory the way our society concieves of Romance (esp in fiction) is a bit boring & this is why most good ships out there are the ones originally written as intense friendships, rivalries etc.

The struggle of modern media is that if you make a relationship between two people a little too flavorful people will start shipping them and you have no control over this whatsoever beyond nuking the quality of your own story

and then it's fun to explore such non-romantic sources of tension through the lens of romance. romance as a framing device instead of a plot arc.

I think there's also expectations and conventions about the arc of a romance narrative that make the romance itself the source of tension, which is less interesting to me (and probably others) than other interpersonal problems.

it is LAUGHABLE to think the paltry payouts we saw in the usa during covid caused the subsequent inflation when it was so obviously a combination of decreased workforce, shipping disruptions, and corporate greed — globally. like, so laughable that I assume it's bait or a bot.

mine was in juk... I foolishly thought I would deglaze the pot before adding water for the rice and reached for the rice vinegar instead of the wine. I do not recommend this approach. it was inedible

honestly I would even say the same impulse is mirrored for men, though of course the closer you are to the white patriarchal ideal the less you're actually punished for it. but racialized, sexualized, and lower class expressions of hypermasculinity are all punished or at least looked down on

if my partner or friend or family member needs a hug, I'm not going to tell them that actually my love language is acts of service or whatever. I'm gonna give them a hug. if I can't for some reason, I'm gonna find a compromise.

but telling someone, I show love in this particular way, without room for how that makes them feel... is not actually loving or caring for them at all
