My standard pinned post: I'm a writer of articles about film, history, culture, geography etc. I produce documentaries at Lonely Tower Film & Media and I've authored 3 history books. I'm also photographer, mostly of landscapes, industrial stuff, and urban scenes.

a scene of Redcar with a building to the left and a wall to the bottom creating leading lines to a focal point where 2 children distantly play. In the background is the sea with wind turbines visible A boat in a bay at Plockton, Scotland. The light is golden and shining on houses and trees in the mid-ground. The background shows a mountain range. The old bridge at sligachan, Isle of Sky. It's a small stone humpbacked bridge over a river, with three arches. In the background the sun is setting and it's hazy with rain - the mountains are almost purple silhouettes. In the far distance 3 tiny hikers can be seen against the light. Green wooden fisherman's huts are off to the mid-right. There's long dune grass in the bottom half of the image. The sky is a dirty blue and there's a powerline running along it, off to the left.

well, they did... they made Game of Thrones. I don't know why they'd need to reimagine that over again with AI 'people'. Likely because people who love AI generated slop have zero imagination or creativity.

What? No, who wants this? Who wants something like this? What is it good for other than as a novelty, which would be fine (not for me, but whatever) if not for that novelty coming with a weight of terrible consequences and ethical minefields.

Want to See Marilyn Monroe in Game of Thrones? AI Could Make It Soon
Despite early, and familiar, copyright growing pains, Sora may be the prelude to AI-generated on-demand TV and movies

Looking at Nothing
A man dressed all in black sits on the edge of a small stone wall overlooking Elton Reservoir Bury.
There is nothing to see as everything is covered in a thick layer of fog

There are more from this day...

whitby pier looking down with the river on the left and the day is very hazy and silvery another of the pier looking across the river, you can see lots of houses stacked up in the distance and again the day is very silvery and hazy with mist the day is very silvery and hazy with mist, the sea is in the foreground and the shore with the cliffs and amusements and restaurants (and hotels at the top) are seen with the sun behind them and shining through the mist - giving everything a fuzzy dream-like quality Looking down the coast a bit, you can see the beach and the sea, with a large building on the headland. Everything is misty and glowing but very monotone in that silvery light

At @ihr.bsky.social we can now offer PhD by Publication in History! For those with a substantial body of existing published research (within past 10 years), but without a PhD, should be of particular interest to #heritage professionals and independent scholars!

I love books as pleasure (to read), I love them as resources (to learn, highlight, make notes in) and I love them as objects (lookin' so pretty on da shelves).

I miss going out with my camera with the sole purpose of photographing whatever I happen to find. Here's one from just over 2 years ago in Whitby, on a really misty, lovely autumn day. Spotted a young guy skimming stones.

an almost silhouette of a young guy in a strange pose, almost like he's dancing, but he's about to lob a stone into the sea in front of him. Cliffs are in the background and you can see a lot of thin low mist around. The whole tone of the image is a warm, silvery colour

I've been unable to keep a polite, neutral face when people talk at me about generative AI, to the point where, without me saying a word, they immediately pivot to being defensive and telling me why I should be using it. It's like a cult.

Written in the early 90s yet still very relevant 😆
Text from a book that says the problem for the British is that we share a language with the Americans, but a culture with europe

I hated that book *so* much.

Right, Monday morning admin out the way, now let's hope this week is a bit less stressful and illness inducing than last. As it's been a while, here are some pictures of the Pedestrian Tyne Tunnel post-renovation.

wooden escalator up to the entrance of the tyne pedestrian tunnel(s) with white arched tile walls with neon green tiles beneath that the curved part of the pedestrian tunnel with aqua blue tiles on the lower half and white/cream tiles on the upper, with bright white lighting in the centre 'county of northumberland' is written in dark blue, backed by aqua tiles. This is in turn on white tyles, with three air vents below, and then blue tiles below that

It seems highly likely, sadly

Who is missing from here who we need to get over to Bluesky? Probably tons but the one that sticks out right now because of the impending season is Giant Poppy Watch.

I actually agree that students should be exempt from council tax (generally no/low wage and already incurring huge expense) but I think the home owners should have to pay it based on the occupancy size instead

'Poor people are getting poorer, the elites are getting richer'... The battles of early trade unionist Thomas Hepburn are still being fought today. This is why the Durham Miners' Association and comrades gather every year to remember Thomas Hepburn at St Mary's Church in Heworth, Gateshead.

have to find some balance where universities can exist without having to become corporate behemoths that absolutely decimate the local communities they sit in and (should) serve. There needs to be a healthy co-existence rather than the parasitic relationship we seem to currently have.
mariegardiner.bsky.social
On a not entirely unrelated note, Durham County Council is absolutely desperate for money, and we are suffering for that in near-constant, massive council tax hikes. The reason is there are so many student homes that are exempt from paying council tax. I'm very obviously not anti-university, but we
