My feeling of despair about the USA as a project had been waning in the past several weeks; this last weekend's protests helped buoy my spirits a lot. But this business of literally tearing down part of the White House right now, without any apparent planning/discussion has set me back months.

This is a little bit of wisdom that I think about a lot. My kid is almost done being a kid. I think I’ve gotten better at this over the years, but it’s still hard some times.

Your kids are not little versions of you; they are little versions of themselves. So, don't be sad or alarmed whenever they are becoming something different from you. Because, they will become lots of things that are different from you, and that's arguably the whole point. It is inarguably a thing that you need to cheerfully celebrate and support.

Why do smoke alarms only go off for no reason in the middle of the night?

Related: in looking for information about which alarm was the culprit for recent unplanned awakenings, I found out Google discontinued the smoke alarms we have. Serves me right, I guess.
