We don’t even need metaphor. 205 years ago the compromise for where to allow slavery was a literal line, 36 deg 30 min latitude. Then the U.S. allowed Kansas to vote on it, leading to civil war. They were admitted to the Union the day 11 southern states seceded. This is the legacy of centrism.

Cone and rod cells in bird eyes also contain colored oil droplets that filter light before the cells sense the light. Filtering light reduces color overlaps between the four cone types, allowing birds to distinguish a high number of colors. Humans do not have these oil droplets.

Your eyes contain rod cells, which are sensitive to low light, and cone cells, which are sensitive to color. Humans have three types of cone cells. Birds have four. In some birds that fourth cone cell is sensitive to UV light, allowing birds to see colors beyond the rainbow.
