Maybe it has big gloves because this mecha is so big, the hands have their own factories or refineries in them, and each finger could be a different sheathed mining or drilling equipment.

I'm reminded of the first version of the panzer tanks, they had "sawed" off barrels. Short barrels just save on materials, but also, short barrels means close combat and that means faster maneuvering.
