Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.

I did it because the government isn’t.

This is what I found.
Yes, but statistically, few people making $40k will have an easy time saving $2k-$8k just for medical expenses.

If you are on the ACA marketplace and are recieving premiums subsidies in 2026, I personally doubt you can afford to save up enough in an HSA to cover your deductible.

Good advice. Just a couple addendums:

1) Some HMOs have wider networks than PPOs. The main tools of HMOs are forcing you to stay in-network and primary care approval for procedures.

2) If you can't save for the high deductible, don't get the HSA plan
It's open enrollment time so here's a convenient peg to hang a little tutorial about how to choose your health insurance.

Most of the advice you get is bad. Most of your instincts are bad. I however used to work for a health insurance company and I do arithmetic for a living so I can help.
Personally I think it's great that my company's HR sends out an official looking tool where they even ask you to pre-populate your healthcare providers and instead of being the actual insurance enrollment process it's just some bullshit checklist to try and convince me I actually don't want a PPO
People were at their maddest about inflation when the bottom 80% saw their largest returns relative to inflation
I guess we're gonna find out if Obamacare enrolles are as good of self-advocates as Medicare enrollees
Higher Obamacare Prices Become Public in a Dozen States

Here are some examples of the price increases under the Affordable Care Act -- unless Republicans act to stop the subsidies from expiring.

As a man that is paying for a wedding in 2025, I yearn for my finances of 2024
I meant the claim that more people were suffering.
Not that I'm complaining, but why?
Good use of your online platform, btw
Personally, I'm not a fan of a tax increase on working class single mothers
While I'm at it, I might as well post the other 3 case studies from the blog entry:

it’s so important, now more than ever, that we remember: there’s a cowboy with a big knife in Dracula, because Dracula takes place in cowboy times.

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”

Yea, for me, I'm at 2% so way less than you. But I'm hoping I can do more after big life events and paying off student loans in a few years.

10% seems really difficult to do, but 5% seems like a good goal.
I ask this every once in awhile, but:

1) What % of your income do you donate to charity and various causes?

2) What % of income do you think people should donate?
