Statement from the organizers of the Longest Ballot Committee
#cdnpoli #electoralreform #battlerivercrowfoot #citizensassembly
Long ballots are incredibly common in many jurisdictions, so when MPs claimed last week at PROC that long ballots confuse voters, we have to laugh. What makes them so sure 🇨🇦 voters are more easily confused than voters elsewhere?

Here’s a ballot from the Netherlands

Yet more manufactured outrage. This talking point relies on the fact that most Canadians won't really know, or understand what an OA actually does.

As someone who was, years ago, a campaign manager for an independent candidate, there is no reason an OA cannot rep multiple candidates.
3/3 Just another very obvious example of why MPs shouldn't be in charge of their own election rules.😀
2/3 As you can see from the results below, sharing OA's is very common. It is disproportionally relied on by the NDP, Green and PPC.
The PROC experts likely had zero clue about this reality, so it's unfortunate their eager endorsements have given a non-partisan cover to a very partisan rule change
1/3 Last week at PROC, profs lined up to support the "1 candidate/OA" proposal. What caught our attention was that they are not proposing 1 candidate/per OA/per riding. To get a better grasp on why they are so interested in this change we took a look at the 2025 election returns...
MP Michael "I saw a youtube video" Cooper, being reminded of the reality of the situation by the CEO of Elections Canada...
A disturbing example of a politician taking clickbait election misinformation seriously.

Today at PROC, Liberal MP Maloney (appearing via zoom) says he's determined to stop long ballots and presents his very own homespun candidate requirement ideas: Candidates must name 3 streets or 2 restaurants in the riding to qualify🙄

Mark your calendars! Tuesday, October 7th Tomas will be presenting to MPs who are eager to find out what we're all about😀
Well-rested after a summer vacation, MPs are ready to get back to their important work.
Screenshot of two current studies being conducted in parliament:
-Report on the 45th General Election of April 28, 2025
-Actions of the "Longest Ballot Committee" in Recent Canadian Elections
"Picking your elected representative is not a joke, I think the longer we have this...the less confidence Canadians have that [MPs] can do anything right, including elections" - MP Melissa Lantsman on the Longest Ballot Committee
In NFLD candidates can run in an unlimited number of ridings, and someone is taking advantage👍
"I'm going to do something that's quite unusual. I mean we all recognize that this has not happened before, but we're also going to push the boundaries of electoral reform."
