week 5 of #rachelcusktogether starts tomorrow. reposting with oct 31 fixed!
thanks for reading with us! gonna continue on?
last day!
Day 39, Nov 8, Sat - p244 “‘There was something so final…” to END OF VOL 1
#rachelcusktogether
Discipline on one side, emotion on the other, with only an armrest between us.

The image that will stay with me from this novel and what I’ll think of whenever I’m on an airplane.
#rachelcusktogether
penultimate day!
Day 38, Nov 7, Fri - p238 “In a way, she accepted…” to p244 “…in the end, of his time.”
#rachelcusktogether
Day 37, Nov 6, Thur - p230 “She asked me how long I had been here…” to p238 “…now pregnant with their first child.”
#rachelcusktogether
very smooth transitions throughout.

Nice segue from the classroom session on animals, when Faye wakes the next morning to the unexpected woman who is like a goose.
Anne is Faye stepping outside herself.
it's the most unlikely title for a novel!
last week of Outline! we're reading 2 & 3!
Day 36, Nov 5, Wed - SHORT DAY START CH 10 p227 to p230 “‘You can probably tell.’”
#rachelcusktogether
very hard to read. terrible how the adults in that family did not train the dog.
Day 35, Nov 4, Tues - p217 “‘In the morning…” to p226 END OF CH 9
#rachelcusktogether
This dog story is mesmerizing. I forgive everybody who read past today's assignment!

#RachelCuskTogether
Also, it seemed strange to me that they wrote these stories but instead of exchanging or reading them aloud in class, they just relate what's in them. That being said, Sylvia's contest with Mimi the dog makes me forget the contrivance. I'm absorbed in it, wondering who will prevail! (Neither?)
love this phrasing by RC: "the hinterland of the relationship"
#rachelcusktogether
"If a man had a nasty side...She didn't want it roaming unseen in the hinterland of the relationship: she wanted to provoke it... Melete laughed. 'According to that logic...there can be no relationship at all. There can only be people stalking one another.'" #rachelcusktogether
Day 34, Nov 3, Mon - p210 “Sylvia stopped speaking…” to p217 “…Mimi’s reach and went to bed.”
#rachelcusktogether
Day 33, Nov 2, Sun - p204 “He had finished writing his story…” to p210 “‘and I went to bed.’”
#rachelcusktogether
oh no! that's awful. hope you're ok.
first the plane, then a race car, then a boat, what's left???
there's much more to today's reading that there are stories swirling around us, but that's what I like to think about.

#rachelcusktogether
I like that idea of too much connection, it's the social equivalent of grabbing a friend intimately when you have (or haven't) earned that right. reading about hermione holding onto elena on a motorcycle reminded me of your comment.
#rachelcusktogether
I think the pace is just right. There's something jarring (? not sure what word to use) about the narrative voice, which simultaneously feels intimate and detached. Sometimes it seems as if there's too much of a connection, that the truths are uncomfortable.
Catching up: Love Cusk's unique brand of humor, that Melete finds that one nemesis who shows up to her readings and makes faces at her as "in fact entirely dependable, more faithful to me than any lover [she's ever had]." She says she tries "to love him back." (188).

She's only a part of the outline to HIS STORY
#rachelcusktogether
What wounds her isn’t only what he says, but the collapse of that self-image—the realization that she’s peripheral to his story.
