California trans rights update:
Governor Newsom signed SB 497, @scottwiener.bsky.social’s Trans Shield Expansion bill. Really good!
Also signed: AB 82 (health care privacy law for gender affirming care), SB 59/AB 1084 (transgender records privacy).

HOWEVER he vetoed SB 418 HRT non-discrimination.

A local reporter asked me for a statement in my capacity as SONC President in reaction to recent announcements for the LA 2028 Olympic Games. My reply, which I expect not to make it to print, is as follows. Today's crises of severe social and political turmoil are much more pressing than LA28.

"The Olympic Games are meant to unite the world in sport, but in this present environment of turmoil and crisis, more pressing matters include a gargantuan fight against authoritarianism, combating abject cruelty to marginalized communities, and severe social and political issues of immediate concern. No one is free until the most vulnerable amongst us are treated as equal and at present, we are failing our immigrant and transgender communities, including athletes from these communities. I hope the Olympics in 2028 will signal a return to values of inclusion and community through strong rejection of hatred, division, exclusion, and discrimination."

The plan here is to employ logical fallacy, confirmation bias, to ignore the 99% satisfaction rate for the 1% regret (compared to ~15% for non-trans care eg knee surgery), and use that to justify banning gender affirming care for ALL ages. It’s a GOP-led genocide.

Attack the glaring factual inaccuracies and outright lies, and include something that demonstrates the severe harm a rule like this will cause, ideally with reference to WPATH citations or studies showing how crucial GAC is. I hope Erin, Lambda or one of the advocates will compile a template.

You are correct. Gender affirming care is a regular feature of many employer sponsored plans and thus this paragraph of the proposed rule is false. It will be crucial to include this discrepancy, amongst others, during the general public comment period to begin later this week.
