I was thinking along the lines of a typewriter. Though early versions would be manual. Press a button or pull a small lever to punch the character, then another to move to the next position.

I ask because I read this on my lunch break and think I have already thought up an easy solution. Won't take long to design and print a prototype. Though I got like 3 projects ahead of me at work and my home rig is currently awaiting a motherboard replacement.
