Today is George Floyd’s birthday. He should be here today, celebrating his 52nd birthday – instead we are mourning his unjust passing.

Today is a reminder that we fight because we deserve justice. We deserve to feel safe. We deserve to live in a country that values us. We deserve better.
Happy birthday, George Floyd - We're still fighting for you - October 14, 1973

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day we honor the resilience, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities.

Today also serves as a reminder that true justice means advocating for the freedom and rights of Indigenous communities, uplifting their voices, and honoring their histories.

Black women have long led the fight for democracy. LDF litigators Constance Baker Motley, Judith Reed, Elaine Jones, Christina Swarns, and Leah Aden, have all argued before SCOTUS, and LDF’s President and Director-Counsel, @janainelson.bsky.social, will do so soon.

From the arts to social justice, the Latin community has helped shape our society into what it is today.

As we close out Latin Heritage Month, let’s celebrate the legacies of these vibrant communities by fighting for their rights and ensuring their contributions are recognized year-round!

Black people with mental illness have a higher risk of being arrested, incarcerated, and fatal harm by police violence.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re calling for community-based mental health services. Because Black people with mental illness deserve to be met with care, not with harm.
Roughly 67% of Black people in need of mental health services don't receive any care #worldmentalhealthday

We firmly denounce any indictment with the goal of partisan retribution. Our legal system should not be a playground for settling personal scores, but rather a system designed to pursue & ensure justice through the thoughtful application of our laws.

The political prosecution of Attorney General James is yet another example of a truly disturbing pattern within this administration to attack and punish Black public servants, especially Black women!

The VRA is a tool for equal representation. On Oct. 15, SCOTUS will rehear Louisiana v. Callais, a case that could gut Section 2.

“This case is about whether Black voters will continue to have the ability to elect candidates of their choice.” – Deuel Ross, LDF Deputy Director of Litigation

With a history of discriminatory practices, Craig Trainor has been confirmed as Assistant Secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Millions of Americans already face barriers to housing. Appointing someone trying to dismantle civil rights protections will only cause more harm.

Book bans are booming. Spoiler: it’s not just coming from PTA moms, but political machines too.

The stories they silence say the most. The numbers don’t lie. #BannedBooksWeek

Fair maps mean your neighborhood gets what it needs.

Unfair maps? That’s how potholes stay, schools struggle, and clinics close. Redistricting always hits close to home. That’s why we’re headed back to SCOTUS on 10/15 to defend the Voting Right Act of 1965.
Poster by the LDF emphasizing the importance of fair voting maps. The poster contrasts 'Fair Maps' with benefits like fair representation and better schools against 'Unfair Maps' which lead to unequal access and resource gaps.

🚨 President Trump approved the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago — and it won't stop there.

They are testing how far they can push their authoritarian agenda by needlessly deploying National Guard troops in cities they deem unsafe, and instilling fear & violence in vulnerable communities.

Another victory in the books! 🎉

A federal appeals court in Massachusetts upheld a block on President Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order. This decision affirms what we already knew: no president is above the Constitution, and if you were born in the U.S., you’re a U.S. citizen – period.

They banned Walker.
They banned Morrison.
They banned Butler.
But we still read.

Black authors have always written truth to power. During #BannedBooksWeek, we honor their words and our right to read them.

ICYMI 🚨 Last week, Missouri stripped Black voters of their power by enacting an unfair, discriminatory congressional map.

Missouri may want to keep Black voters out of the political process, but we won't have it. We stand with Black voters and will continue to fight for their right to vote.
