Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

losing my house was very freeing honestly. I love FFXIV but I can't afford to keep subbing for a house anymore u_u I want to play when I can play and rest when I need to rest, just like YoshiP intended. Thankfully it's not impossible to get housing anymore if you ever wanted it back too
