Third parties just split the vote of one party and ensure minority rule. Nobody wants to build up from the local level first. People have options in the primaries and don’t vote in those.

The closest equivalent: the moderate left and right cooperating right now to squelch the radical right is unthinkable. They certainly could, but the cultural framework for such a thing is entirely lacking.

As an American with strong European ties (I am also an Irish citizen married to a Dutch citizen), I think it helps that most European countries have many coalitions who know they must work together around common goals. We don’t have anything like that here.

I am with you. The equating both parties people helped get us here, and I’m out of patience with them. We have a binary system and pretending we have a utopian 3rd option is killing us. Maybe *someday* there will be a viable third party on the national level, but that’s not anytime soon.
