it’s not far closer to acute levels, it is in fact at least an order of magnitude lower even for the “worst” protein source from the CR article. if you’re not or not about to be pregnant it’s simply not a relevant concern for any adult.

okay so to put a finer point on it, if you ate nothing but *5 servings* of the naked vegan mass gainer per day (~35-40 mcg of lead exposure) and a multivitamin, here’s what would happen

i just checked, that would be 6,150 calories per day of mass gainer so you would die of obesity related health complications well before you could ever measure a single point increase in your systolic blood pressure attributable to the lead exposure

for reasons unrelated to this thread i happen to know what my actual macros look like and i’m typically at 40% fats 40% carbs and 20% protein on a ~2800 or so calorie diet (so 140-150g protein on a typical day), i’m not exactly demonizing fats and carbs in a balanced diet here

i’m suggesting that if someone is going to (for a fixed number of calories) lower their protein intake because they think they’re over-consuming above the RDA and replace those calories with carbs and fats it is at the very least kind of a dumb choice, certainly so for many choices of carbs and fats

the studies i found showed a lot of heterogeneity due to methodological differences between EU countries, but grains, drinking water, milk products, and beer were major sources. also wild game. don’t eat wild caught game that’s been rifle hunted if you care about lead exposure.

michael phelps could literally have subsisted on the vegan mass gainer at his peak of 10k calories per day when training and he would STILL be considered an average EU citizen for his dietary lead exposure

no not even close! he would still be below the level of dietary exposure that lands him at a blood level of 3.5 mcg/dL according to how these FDA limits were established. and that is itself still more than 10x below what’s considered lead poisoning (~40 mcg/dL)

doubtful tbh, you’d need to be consuming an exceptionally contaminated source of pea protein to even get to the level of blood lead that would catch anyone’s attention as “interesting” never mind concerning
