THE FEDERAL LEAGUE
The challenge to organized baseball wrought by the new Federal League in 1914 had extensive consequences: some of the best American and National League players, including Hal Chase, Ed Reulbach, and Eddie Plank, jumped their clubs; player salaries went up with the competition; and Judge Ke-nesaw Mountain Landis, in whose court the dispute with the Federals was heard, was elevated to baseball prominence. Still the Feds were dead by the end of the 1915 season when a truce was signed, including compensation to the owners of the defunct teams.
