Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

This includes approximately 3,544 administrative detainees held without trial or charge, about 2,673 detainees classified as “unlawful combatants,” and 1,400+ sentenced prisoners serving various terms. Additionally, around 400 children are among those detained, held under administrative detention.

Over the last two years, Israel has taken into detention more than 11,100 Palestinian detainees in its custody as of October 2025, marking the highest number since the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000.
