Not a great season for mushrooms because of drought conditions, but saw this pristine Inky Cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria) yesterday. #WildHungary #mushrooms #fungi
Another bird @ the local pond.. Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus). Used to be conspecific with NA's Common Gallinule. This is a tiny, man-made lake. They just dug it out about a year or so ago. But as soon as a few reeds take over the shoreline, these guys show up. 😀 #BirdingHungary #marshbirds
Close up of the Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea). Looks very similar to NA's Great Blue Heron but slightly smaller and much paler overall. #BirdingHungary #herons #waders
Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) at the local pond. Solar panels make a convenient perch. 😀 #BirdingHungary #herons #waders #BigBirds
Yes.. it is very cool to see! And the sound! They are very vocal in flight and when you get 400 calling at once, it is such an incredible sound!
Common Crane migration is picking up, and Grus grus don't take the bus! They prefer to fly. 😀 Whilst I was watching the godwit, a flock of 400 #cranes flew very high over my head. #BirdingHungary #FallMigration2025
One 4 #WaderWednesday - though never seen this species anywhere near water. 😀 Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus). 13 together in this field. Once they sit down, they virtually disappear as they are the same colour as the dry grass. #BirdingHungary #plovers #waders #shorebirds
Short video of the Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). Watched it for a good half hour and it never stopped feeding once. Perpetual motion machine! Gotta fatten up for the next leg of its long journey. 😀 #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #godwits #WaderWednesday #waders
Another image of Bar-tailed Godwit at Lake Balaton. Ones that breed in Alaska fly non-stop to NZ, a journey of over 11,000 km (7,000 miles) that they accomplish in a single 10 or 11 day flight! 😳😳😳 When I call them masters of migration, I ain't kidding! #BirdingHungary #WaderWednesday #shorebirds
I love #shorebirds and here is one of my all-time favorites. Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). The masters of migration. The ones that show up in Hungary breed in N. Scandinavia and winter in West Africa #BirdingHungary #godwits #waders #WaderWednesday
A blast of colour to brighten up your Tuesday.... Meadow Clary (Salvia pratensis) 😀 #WildHungary #wildflowers #wildflowerpower
♀️ Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) cruising over my head. At a distance, it can sometimes look like a buzzard because it is so big and stocky. Not lightly built like most other harrier species. #BirdingHungary #harriers #raptors #BirdsOfPrey
Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) talking flight. #BirdingHungary #hawks #buzzards #BirdsOfPrey #raptors
Why did the #deer cross the road? 🤔 #WildHungary #RoeDeer
😀 Yeah.. that's the way a lot of #waterfowl does it including #ducks , #geese , #loons , #grebes . The weight of the male pushes the female underwater yet somehow they can successully mate like that. But I have also seen ducks doing it on land.
A blast of colour to counteract the #MondayBlues 😄 Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas). Nice to see a fresh one so late in the year. In southern Europe, they can have up to three broods a year, so they are always keeping it funky fresh 😎 #WildHungary #butterflies #insects #bugs #MacroMonday
Saw this great copper-coloured fly feeding on goldenrod. No idea what species, except that it is likely a Calyptrate fly. Only about 18,000 species in that sub-family so that kind of narrows it down. 🤪 #WildHungary #MacroMonday #flies #bugs #insects
It's a looong way from spring , so I was surprised to see this Mallard couple getting it on! 💘 😄 #BirdingHungary #ducks #mallards #DuckLove
Speaking of #eagles , this adult White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) was attracting a crowd. 😀 #BirdingHungary #raptors #BirdsOfPrey
Another photo of yesterday's young Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca). This angle show the distended crop much better. It looked like it just swallowed a coconut! 😄 #BirdingHungary #eagles #raptors #BirdsOfPrey
