Well I did do it all in English but I think it was a good use of time. I will adapt and do it in German in future!
German instructors prepping for 🎃: a "listen and draw" activity. Students listen to a description of a spooky artwork and sketch it, then a "reveal"! Inspired by @mrfishersays.bsky.social and Cécile Lainé on "Toward Proficiency". Feel free to take and adapt! docs.google.com/presentation...

I have to say this produced really good conversation about what makes a strong essay and students were able to identify great things. I was also able to answer common questions about "I" voice in writing, about register/formality, about what is good "evidence" etc
Another goal of today's writing workshop in German class: to show students that becoming better writers in German also helps make them better writers/communicators in other areas. And to emphasize that original thought is the main strength of good writing. Stay tuned how this goes. #LanguageTeaching
Today I'm giving students 3 "sample essays" and they need to identify the strengths/weaknesses. Then we will talk about which essay is probably in the "A" range, which "B" range, and which "C" range for a given prompt. I am hoping that they will identify the features that make an essay stronger.
seriously. I just asked students to turn in a "messy first draft" and show me their imperfections.
in this episode you also reference an academic article about play and/or games? Can you provide the reference?
Next time I would also provide reminders about all the "W" question words, and the option to answer "Das ist zu privat!" or "Das ist geheim" :)
This was a great communicative activity. Simple but fun. Students said one thing they are doing this weekend. The other students had to (1) listen and then (2) be "nosy" and ask follow-up questions to pump them for additional details. #teachgerman #langchat #communicative
Yes! We need to meet in person so I can buy you a coffee IRL!😀
"Listen with the intent to understand" ❤️ How do we negotiate meaning in a way that is respectful? Lots of great tips here!
"Everyone has an accent is something we can't say enough". Thanks @mrfishersays.bsky.social ! Also: Intelligibility is both speaker + listener. We can all work on being better listeners. 👏👏👏
Great episode. I assign a reflection forum in 101 to invite students to also reflect on these issues related to accent as they start German.
German educators! Please mark your calendars and join us on Nov. 4th.
