Readers also simply find stories that contain negative conflict and characters with negative traits more compelling (Maslej et al. 2021). In the case of expressive writing, individuals are provided a therapeutic means to process thoughts and feelings relating to traumatic experiences (Lepore 2013), which can compel them to share these narratives and form positive connections with others instead of self-isolating (Sloan 2008). Participants of such writing generally have less tension, anger and depressive symptoms, as well as a lowered stress response to triggering topics (Smyth et al. 2008). In fandom settings, aside from simple self-indulgence, traumatized individuals may utilize fictional characters and fantasy worlds to enact agency over their narratives while connecting with other survivors in a positive fan setting. While research shows such writing improves PTSD symptoms by allowing individuals to socialize and process their negative experiences in a supportive environment (Sloan et al. 2008), antis are instead encouraged to adopt the opposing damaging method of rumination.
