Here is my "Favorite Character Bingo" from earlier this year. If you're thinking about following me, and want to know if you should just get out now (you probably should), figured this is a good way to show my interests.
This had a lot of what I think makes a "Difficult old game" really work. While it felt punishing, it still had infinite continues, so the worst thing would always be "Going back to the start of the level", so I could always eventually overcome, and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed this game quite a bit.
Also there were multiple characters. None of them felt as good as Trevor though, I only really used Alucard or Grant to deal with some nightmare platforming sections. I like that some rooms had shortcuts or extra goodies you could grab if you had certain characters with you, that's a nice touch.
without jumping in a pit two more times to just Game Over. On repeat levels in other routes, I did use them at checkpoints, just because I had already proven I could beat them. It genuinely was nice to prove myself, and like the first level, the controls made everything feel deliberate in a good way
I don't want to sound too negative though. The level design was mostly pretty well thought out (except that falling block level on the Alucard route, that was just bad), and it was satisfying to win. I managed to beat it without save states, other than the start of the level to refresh my lives...
It's most egregious in the final boss though. In CV1, even though Game Overs normally sent you back to the start of the level, once you got to the final boss, you were there. This game, even if you still had lives left, dying sent you back a few room, which could EASILY damage you. It was too much.
The checkpoints felt more brutal here. Maybe it was my imagination because it was already more difficult, but it felt rough. I had to pretty much learn how to do the last rooms of a level perfectly, or I'd have to fight a boss that would already be difficult WITH full health... without full health.
I'm kind of a believer that if you make something more challenging, you should either just make it harder through design, or remove some features to make it more challenging... doing both is USUALLY overkill. It's obviously a case by case basis, but It very much WAS overkill in this case.
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

Another difficult classic Castlevania adventure. A very technically impressive game for the NES, especially in 1989, it was very solid presentation-wise. It had a lot of the very deliberate and challenging level design of the first game... with some odd decisions.

It makes me so irrationally(?) angry every time a new Bubsy game happens, because it's so undeserved. So many great series have died, and Bubsy gets to just keep on existing, and people act like it's cool because of irony.
While not my favorite AA, this one definitely was a fun time, and it's nice to feel like this series still has a lot to offer even after the main trilogy. Looking forward to trying the next game soon.
Athena is good, and I appreciate how Apollo starts feeling like his own character here, but don't think the rest of the prosecution side characters are the series' best. But this game is great at making me care about the stories of each of the ensembles of one-off characters that appear in each case
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

Another solid entry into the Ace Attorney series. A step up from Apollo Justice, this game has multiple protagonist, each coming in and out of the story as needed, to solve cases. And it's pretty good the whole way through.
The idea that Nintendo actually added a side game to a port instead of charging full price for an old port by itself, and actually adding online co-op to a multiplayer game seem so easy, but Nintendo has still failed to do either of these things right since.
It still infuriates me thinking about how good the Super Mario 3D World port on Switch was, and how Nintendo learned nothing from it, and has continued to forget all of the things that were in it.
