Dead dead dead dead dead. Well, we lasted two full years. What a journey.

Hey, Richard is awake now! Good job, buddy!
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Hvost is dead. Hope Richard breaks out of his catatonia before he starves to death!
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Hvost lost a fight with a squirrel and is now bleeding out in the snow

Current situation

Richard: catatonic
Sahib: off rescuing her mom
Hvost: gone berserk, punching random rats to death
O'Connor: captured
Annah, Will, Monkey, Taiga: dead.
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Fuck me, a grizzly bear killed Annah. This is a brutal season.
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Welp, Sahib's mom needs help. Looks like Sahib's gonna take this one solo, as she's the closest we've got to combat ready, and she's not gonna sit it out.
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Oop. Richard has broken down from wounds sustained and has fallen catatonic in the snow.
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
He clobbers her in the back of the head with the gun. She turns around and *destroys his hand with a punch*. She downs him pretty handily, and drags him back to the base for medical care.

The Arroero Confederacy decides that now is a great time to attack. Somehow, Richard is able to snipe them off.

Hvost goes into a rage. He's had it with Sahib: she's gonna die. I set her aggression response to fight back. Sahib's the better combatant, but she's off hunting with a revolver, while Hvost carries an SMG and has the element of surprise.

Foolishly, he elects to close to melee before attacking her.
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
We successfully convince Sahib to join us! The stress causes her to break, and she goes on insulting spree toward Hvost, provoking him all day until he retaliates. Meanwhile, Monkey gets mauled by a cougar while hunting. We heal her up, but she's infected. In the neck. She dies.

Hvost was her lover

Will's dead. O'Connor's abducted. Both our fighting animals are dead. It's fine, we're fine. Richard, Hvost, Annah, and Monkey get to work hunkering down for the winter, and trying to recruit Sahib. With his wife missing, Richard goes on an eating binge, wolfing down supplies for a whole day.

While the enemy is distracted by the rampaging wolf, Richard, O'Connor, and Hvost go and successfully defend the base, killing two raiders and the wolf. The third raider, unfortunately, captures O'Connor and escapes.

Annah drags her husband will back to the hospital, where he dies immediately. Fuck
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
While Will is off hunting down the timber wolf, the red alert pops up--we're being raided. Fuck. The timber wolf mauls Will, off in the corner of the map. Okay, he's still alive. Annah, his noncombatant wife, goes off to rescue him.

After downing Will, the timber wolf attacks the invaders!

We return to find the place literally on fire--there's a lightning storm going on. The gang divide up tasks--our prisoner's arm is badly infected, Monkey's injured, there's a timber wolf lurking about, and the place needs repair.

Hvost has to amputate Sahib's arm, so she doesn't die.

Jesus Christ. So. We picked up a transmission from Will's wife, Annah--she's being held prisoner. Okay, we send the gang to go break her out. Success! She joins, and we take a prisoner--Sahib, a beautiful courtesan--to boot. That's the last thing that goes well.

And if this argument boils down to "one is a narrative decision because ttrpgs are narrative" then, well, that's pretty circular
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Like, you could call that a narrative decision? But it feels pretty identical to resigning a lost chess game
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Yeah mostly I'm interested in interrogating whether narrative concerns are the *only* type of edit in ttrpgs.

Thinking of a d&d game i was in where we had a combat where the enemy was paralyzed and slowly and inevitably going to die, and the DM elected to say "you win" rather than play it to zero
