Important report from the @suttontrust.bsky.social highlights the significant financial impact that having a child with SEND can have on families - a crucial factor that must be considered by the Government when shaping opportunities and outcomes for every child.
🚨 NEW: Children from low-income homes are more likely to have special educational needs and are also less likely to get the support they need, we have found.

Our new research reveals massive socio-economic inequalities in accessing support from a SEND system in crisis 🧵⤵️
The stories, history, and reflections shared by Stephen were both moving and eye-opening, reminding us all of the importance of inclusion, understanding, and rehumanising the way society sees people with learning disabilities.
We had an incredible evening with @stephenunwin.bsky.social exploring his powerful new book, Beautiful Lives: How We Got Learning Disabilities So Wrong.

A huge thank you to @cathynewman.bsky.social for hosting the conversation and guiding such an insightful interview and Q&A.

Every child deserves support, no matter their background. It’s time for proper funding, joined-up services, and a truly inclusive education system. 💜 #SENDReform #Inclusion
It also highlighted what good inclusive mainstream education looks like: a school that takes a whole-school approach to inclusion.

When inclusion is built into every classroom and policy, attendance rises and suspensions fall.
The programme followed children of different ages, all struggling with low attendance or out of school entirely - showing how a lack of resource and early intervention can lead to families hitting crisis.

EHCPs have become the only route to help, and the wait is far too long.
Last night's impactful Panorama documentary with Kellie Bright highlighted what families of children with SEND know all too well - the system is underfunded, and too many children are being left without the support they need.

MPs drop in today was packed with young people, parents and politicians keen to share stories and solutions. Great to see new minister @georgiagould.bsky.social eager to listen to families’ experiences. These must be front and centre of the reforms. @dcpcampaign.bsky.social @kidscharity.bsky.social

Great to hear @janeharrislondon.bsky.social from
@speechandlanguk.bsky.social & @dcpcampaign.bsky.social highlighting a clear need for more training & greater understanding in schools - reminding us that the system is still stacked against those with additional needs.

@janeharrislondon.bsky.social was on Sky News this morning representing @dcpcampaign.bsky.social ahead of the SEND rally today!

Reform is desperately needed so that children with SEND and their families don’t have to fight for the ordinary things in life.
Alongside Kids colleagues, it was great to see so many people from the SEND community at the #FightforOrdinary rally this morning.

Powerful speeches showed everyone was united in one goal; for every child & young person to have the chance to learn, feel safe & be understood.

'When you know better, do better. Now do better for Send children'. A brilliant banner at today's parents' rally in Parliament in support of every child with Send. Hotfooting it now to the MPs' drop in to support the 'fight for ordinary'! @kidscharity.bsky.social @dcpcampaign.bsky.social
